How does Tommy John Surgery Affect a QB's Future?

Postby titans_cafe » Tue Nov 06, 2007 1:30 pm

They say in baseball, it takes about 2 years for a pitcher to return to form after TJ surgery. Does anyone have an idea how this relates to a QB?

Needless to say, I own Delhomme in a dynasty league.

I believe Tommy Maddox and Chad Pennington both had Tommy John and neither have done a lot since surgery :-?

Usually takes about 1 1/2 to come back from a TJ surgery. I know that pitchers throw harder afterwards, but not sure about QB's. If what Dream says is true, I would stay away from Delhomme

Its going to be awhile, it takes at least a year to recover and by then the next season has already started, and chances of him coming back and being a relevant qb are very slim, as he was already on the decline...Only nfl qb I know that had tommy john surgery was rob johnson awhile back, he came back alot worse afterwards...different players but age is always a concern

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Chad Pennington had multiple shoulder surgeries (rotator cuff problems) I don't think he ever had Tommy John surgery, at least not on his throwing elbow. I don't believe any NFL QB has had Tommy John surgery before Delhomme, a surgery preformed to this point only on baseball pitchers.

Not sure about Maddox (He's had knee problems that I know of) but I was under the impression this was the first Tommy John surgery done outside of the baseball world.

I was given bad information. Neither Chad or Tommy had it :-/

kffl.com wrote:Jake Delhomme - Quarterback - Carolina Panthers - Elbow Ligament Replacement - Status: Placed on Injured Reserve
Delhomme is only the third NFL player ever to undergo Tommy John surgery. The other players were quarterbacks Craig Erickson and Rob Johnson, but never really had a chance to test out the elbow in a full-time capacity like Delhomme is expected to do in 2008.

"Tommy John" surgery is the rebuilding of the inside elbow ligament or ulnar (medial) collateral ligament. This procedure restored the pitching career of pitcher Tommy John in 1974.

The elbow is a hinge-type joint. It has two supporting ligaments, the outside (lateral-radial) or inside (medial-ulnar) collateral ligament. A complete tear of the inside ligaments need a tendon graft repair (reconstruction). If the inside ligament is completely torn (Grade 3 sprain) the elbow hinge joint is unstable. A partial tear (Grade 1 or 2) is known as a "dead arm" in a baseball pitcher. Before surgical reconstruction was developed, this injury ended a pitcher's career. The throwing motion of a pitcher also involves torque (twisting). Tommy John added another 13 years to his career. The recovery is eight to 12 months, and full strength in a quarterback may take 24 months.

Hmm, that's what I thought.

So it looks like Delhomme will be the first real true test at making a comeback after this surgery in the NFL. (Rob Johnson and Craig Erickson aren't really gauges I could use. :-b) I honestly hope he has a shot to make a successful comeback.

I would think an NFL QB has a better chance at coming back fully from a Tommy John surgery than a MLB pitcher because the strain on the elbow is a bit different between the two because of the torque. Other than that though, I've no idea.

The cake is a lie.
