Dreamweaver Help

Postby gtabaplayr » Tue Nov 13, 2007 9:59 am

Hey guys,

So I've been trying update the Website for the small business I work for and I'm having a few issues. Several years ago, we paid someone to create the Website and I believe they used Frontpage since to log into the ftp server location is ftp://frontpage.mycompanyname.com

Ok, so downloaded the trial version of Dreamweaver to update a few links and whatnot so we wouldn't have to pay someone else to do it (I've never used Dreamweaver before). Everything seemed to be working fine- I created a new local FTP site on my computer and I was able to access all of the pages to my company Website using Dreamweaver. When I updated some of the text on my homepage and saved it to the remote server, the text did change when I accessed my site through IE. However, all of the images and links are no longer working. The links seem to be referring to my local computer files instead of the host server. Every other page is still fully operational besides my main company homepage (the most important page obviously) because that is the only one I've altered up to this point.

I'm not all that experience in web page creation, but it seemed pretty easy after I went through a few tutorials - I guess not though. Can anyone help me with this???

front page was such a terrible program. it looks like your links are pointing to htm documents, but the address is not complete.

Code: Select all
<a href="index.htm">

either that's not enough information about the location of the document or the file is not in the default folder. same with the image files. it's tough to take a page created in frontpage and then edit it using dreamweaver without totally scrapping it. frontpage adds a whole bunch of useless code and really just muddies up the html. it's been a while since i wrote html code. you might check the file extensions htm vs. html. sometimes they get saved differently.

Alright, I'll look into it- thanks. If that doesn't work, what options do I have to get it back to it's original state? Should I contact Dreamweaver support?

probably not going to get much help being a freeware/trial version of the software. you might try pointing back to the original ftp server.

I just noticed I don't have a Host Directory defined only my FTP Host. Could this be the problem? When I read through the tutorial it said that it wasn't always necessary to have a Host Directory. When I plug in the Host Directory I think might be correct (just the FTP site) and test it, it gives me an error message. This is why I just left Host Directory blank in the first place and went with only the FTP site.

it's worth messing with. it's hard for me since i've been out of the game for a couple years to do this without actually getting my hands dirty on the machine.

It's been too long since I have dabbled in web design, but apparently all those image references that look like this:
Code: Select all
<img border="0" src="images/Trombly_Banner.jpg" width="631" height="160"></p>

Are actually pointing to a folder on your computer. Most likely they are pointing to the folder where your dreamweaver file is saved /images/Trombly_Banner.jpg etc., etc. The problem is that I don't know for sure how to fix that. I have had the same problem and that's what its doing. You just need to find a way to specify the default directory to your ftp server and it should be all set. Sorry I can't help more than that though.

Re: Dreamweaver Help

Postby gtabaplayr » Tue Nov 13, 2007 12:42 pm

I was just checking the Dreamweaver support center, and I think I may have found the solution:

http://www.adobe.com/support/dreamweave ... ote05.html

Determining the remote site's host directory (FTP only)
The host directory you specify in the Site Definition dialog box (see Associating a remote server with a local site) should be the same as the root folder for the local site. If the structure of your remote site doesn't match the structure of your local site, your files will be uploaded to the wrong place and won't be visible to visitors to the site. Also, your image and link paths will be broken.

The remote root directory must exist before Dreamweaver can connect to it. If you don't have a root directory for your site on the remote server, create one before attempting to connect, or ask the server's administrator to create a root directory for you if you can't do it.

If you're uncertain what to enter in the Host Directory field, try leaving it blank. On some servers, your root directory is the same as the directory you first connect to with FTP. To find out, connect to the server. If a folder with a name like public_html, or www, or your login name, appears in the Remote File view in your Site window, that's probably the directory you should use in the Host Directory field. Write down the directory name, disconnect, and reopen the Site Definition dialog box. Then enter the directory name in the Host Directory field and connect again.

Does anyone know how I would get the structures to match? I think I have an idea, but I'm not exactly sure - I guess I'll just mess around with it for a while. Hopefully I can get it back to normal by tomorrow.
