Just from personal observation, I have nothing to back it up, I'd say basketball's popularity isn't really down that much. However, the average age of basketball fans is lower than it is for the other major sports. Again, that's simply a personal observation from what I've seen, and very well could be wrong.
I don't think I know anyone anymore who pays any attention to pro basketball. College ball, sure, but I don't think I know anyone who still watches NBA. I'll have to ask around...

I still catch a pro game every now and then but I don't really follow until football is over.
