Michigan State payed Hawaii a quarter million to not have Hawaii come play at their house. USC, Michigan and Texas all turned down Hawaii traveling to their respective stadiums for this year. Next year they play two Pac-10 teams, but Colt Brennan will no longer be around. A year too late perhaps.
They play UF at the swamp to open the season next year

Source to backup that USC, Michigan, and Texas all turned down Hawaii coming to their house to play?
Although next year as you said they play Wash St, Oregon St, and Florida so they're beefing their patsy schedule some.

The one thing I have to say about schedules is sometimes they aren't what they were when they were made. Not really talking about Hawaii per se, but schedules are often made 5 years in advance and some teams just aren't as good as they were when the schedule was made. Also, sometimes teams back out and you are forced to shove someone in there.
Hawaii coach June Jones wanted his football team to open the season at Michigan. The Wolverines wouldn't play the Warriors and instead hosted Division I-AA Appalachian State, which beat Michigan 34-32 in one of the biggest upsets in college football history.
Hawaii was scheduled to play Michigan State this season, but the Spartans paid $250,000 to cancel the game. Jones tried to replace the Spartans with Southern California, but even the Trojans wanted no part of quarterback Colt Brennan and the Warriors' high-octane offense.
"We offered to play everybody," Jones said. "No one wanted to play us."
That's from Mark Schlabach, ESPN. As for Texas, when I was in Hawaii over the summer visiting family I saw an article in the local paper about Texas turning down Hawaii for a game this year. I'm sure I can find it posted somewhere online. I'll take a look later when I get more time.

There was a lot of crap that was going on between the teams, and it was very obvious that no more games were going to happen. The coaches seemed to despise each other, and ADs were not enamored either. MSU was said to never go out there again for how they were treated out there. As far as "who paid off who", I don't recall specifics, but don't hang it on MSU ducking them. Hawaii was not all that accomodating..
