I have been arguing with a friend of mine who says that Wes Welker is a top 10 WR in the NFL. I disagree and think he isnt even in the top 20 or 25 WR. Don't get me wrong. I think the he is a very good well-rounded WR, but I also think that a lot of his success can be contributed to Brady and I don't consider him to be a great WR. He is obviously an asset to that team but keep in mind that Moss, Watson, and Stallworth draw a lot of attention from opposing defenses.
I have a feeling I am going to get ripped for this one
in pure ability i don't see him being top 10 at all. his job is to stay underneath and catch safe passes, which he does a wonderful job doing. he's good at what he does but a lot of his numbers this year are a byproduct of brady and moss. he didn't do much for miami.
Thanks to deluxe_247 for sig, he is welcome to sail with the Captain too! I will win all of the fantasy cafe games.....next year
As an overall WR he's not that great at all but as a slot receiver and punt return man he has the speed and does a great job. He's definitely one of the top ten "inside" WR's in the game in my book. He wasn't THAT great in Miami, he had a few big punt returns and key games at key times but no one really saw his success coming this season. I think his numbers are really a credit to the system he plays in right now but he does have good hands and rarely drops the ball. He's an outstanding blocker too.
I can't really stack him up against other WR's because his game is pretty unique. He's a great athlete and New England is using him exactly how he should be used and everyone is thriving.
he is a real threat in the return game, so he has extra value because of that, but he is nothing too special. Probably a no.2 on some teams or a no.3 on almost all.
ADMIN edit: please note that the overall sig limit is 12k - thanks! (Thanks Leber) AIM is like multiplayer notepad
i don't think his performance at Miami is really relevant. As we all know, they have been fantastic with judging their talent. It's kind of like when the Eagles were pilloried for signing "washed up garcia" because he stunk with the Lions. I think I'll trust Reid and Bellicheck, thanks. That being said, he is a role player, albeit a high quality one. He doesn't "stack up" against any of the real names at the #1 position, but as a number two I think he is pretty sweet.
The opening scene of the movie "Saving Private Ryan" is loosely based on games of dodgeball Brian Dawkins played in second grade.

Agree. In fact, if Moss or Stallworth got injured (Brady forbid!) I think Gaffney would fill in for one of them and Welker would stay in the slot, where he's most effective.
He might even be in the top 3 among slot receivers, and the Patriots make him look like the best.
Going over the middle and on third down I would say he is top 5. I wouldn't want to see him on the outside matched up against a Champ Bailey or other top corner.
