In the early 1950's, I played in the NFL. I used to carry a 72 inch rolled piece of adhesive tape in my helmet during NFL games. When it came time to kick a Field Goal, I would use the tape as a directionaly aid by taking the tape out, and rolling it out on the ground between the line of scrimmage and the point where I wanted the ball spotted for my kick attempt.
To my chagrin, a rule was eventually created prohibiting players from using "any artificial medium" to assist in the execution of a Field Goal or an Extra Point attempt.
