Todd Doxey, a redshirt freshman defensive back for the University of Oregon football team, died Sunday night after struggling while swimming in the McKenzie River, according to the Lane County Sheriff's Office.
Doxey, 19, jumped into the river from the Marcola Road Bridge at about 3:20 p.m. and began swimming across the current toward a boat ramp. He became fatigued and had difficulty keeping his head above water, according to the sheriff's office.
Several people noticed Doxey struggling in the water. A fisherman in a drift boat pulled him from the water and began administering CPR, officials said. Rescuers from Springfield took Doxey to the boat ramp, and an ambulance took him to McKenzie-Willamette Hospital in Springfield.
