Falcons Release TE Alge Crumpler

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Falcons released seven players Friday, including four-time Pro Bowl TE Alge Crumpler, QB Byron Leftwich, and LT Wayne Gandy. This is a strong statement about Crumpler's lack of conditioning and health, because the team saves only $1.3 million by cutting Crumpler this season. Crumpler, 30, has some question marks but immediately becomes the top tight end on the free agent market. He'd be worthwhile pickup for a team like the Vikings, Bills, Seahawks, or Buccaneers

Are you kidding me??? 2 of our biggest position needs are falling into our laps in 1 week even before FA begins....First Lg Mike Wahle and now a top tier TE.....I got 2-1 odds we sign him. You must believe that playing with Patrick Kerney and having Mora as a head coach before will lead the Seahawks to dial him up and Mora to try and pull him in.....this could be huge boys....we could have TE and LG positions filled with pro-bowlers without costing us in a trade or draft pick and use our top draft picks to go after Johnathon Stewart and a DT in the draft and then have all our lacking positions filled by draft day.

This week has been too good to be true, you know Mora is getting Crumpler to come to Seattle for a visit before he stops by anywhere else, the Seahawks would have to be fools to pass on this.

I just read about Crumpler this morning and got excited. Seriously, there is good reason to think he'll want to reunite and he could even do it on the cheap. Getting someone like him to a 3-4 year contract would do wonders for us. Hell, even one year on the cheap so he can "prove" his worth outside of Atlanta would work. It gives us time to make moves with D.J. Hackett and even possibly use our 1st round pick differently than we might have (I had heard we could spend a high draft pick on a TE...not my favorite use for that pick).

I'm going to shut up now so I don't jinx it, but the stars do seem to be aligning right now when I thought we could finally be on the big downslope back to NFC West mediocrity.

Johnathon Stewart... I'd love to get him, but he ain't falling to us. We'd have to trade up to get him. Maybe Rashard Mendenhall?

You guys are going to be disappointed if you really think he's going to fall to us. After watching YouTube tapes of all of the "front runner" RBs for this draft, I can say that Stewart looks the most like an NFL back to me. Granted, I only saw someone's version of highlights all taped together, but Stewart was breaking tackles and running over people where McFadden, Mendenhall and Felix Jones all look like they're just outrunning everyone else.

You're not about to outrun NFL DBs unless you're an elite runner. And I don't mean elite for the NFL, I mean elite like you'd win the Olympics in a 100m race. Even then, football smarts usually still win.

But to quote one of my favorite movies as a kid "Why are you messing with the fantasy? We know about the reality. Don't mess with the fantasy, okay?"

Trust me, I was this to happen as much as you guys do. But one wonders if the Seahawks really would even take an RB in the first round this year. Something tells me that we're going to give Shaun another shot and mix in Morris and (my favorite) Leonard Weaver. We probably won't see a change in RB until Holmgren leaves and Mora takes over...
