Stealth Bomber Crashes

Saw an article today that the last of the stealth fighters are to be retired in Q1/Q2 this year. I'd thought they were retired already, but that's beside the point.

Remember how much pride there (in the US anyway) was in 1990 when Desert Storm went into effect and the stealth fighters proved they really worked?

Barely 20 years of service life from them but what advances they contributed to. With the B-2 and F-22 now in production I can only wonder what's next on the drawing boards.

Different topic, but what you said is something I've wondered about the space program. They want to retire the shuttle fleet in 2010. I've seen shows about new booster platforms but not much else planned that I know of.

The F-117 has been in service since the early 80s, so this is a reasonably decent shelf life for that platform. Remember that this thing is less a "fighter" jet and more a strategic bomber, since its air-to-air capabilities are negligible.

The F-117 was made redundant when the F-22 Raptor came on line in 2005. The F-22 is superior in speed, stealth technology, armament and bomb payload. It is a true air superiority fighter, and has the cajones to mix it up with the world's best fighter aircraft. It's stealth capabilities give it a distinct advantage in air combat missions, as well as in strategic bombing missions and general avoidance situations.

The Raptor is the world standard in fighter technology at this time. We don't need the F-117 anymore.
