Big talk - can he back it up on the field???

The good thing is most fantasy owners will not have to take too big a risk to find out. He should come at a decent value, and if someone reaches for him in a draft ... no biggie. I would take him if the price was right, mid- to late-rounds, and hope for the best. He certainly has the potential, and the ego, to have a very good season.

Martz is known for pass pass pass, that's for sure. But has he ever been known as a guy who gets the TE the ball!? ....any stat junkies out there (I would like to know what stats the TE's put up under his coaching).

Davis is only going to have success if he is used as a WR, ala Dallas Clark. Martz doesn't utilize the TE position, but that doesn't mean he can't put Davis in the slot early and often. This is one worth watching in preseason, because extensive time on the sideline or in pass protection will mean don't even waste a pick on the guy.

If Martz shows he's willing to stretch Davis outside, then I think he should be at the tail end of starting TEs in fantasy leagues (I'd prefer to have him as my 2nd TE if your bench is deep enough to carry one) - he has more upside than guys like Owen Daniels and Greg Olsen simply because of the offense he'll be in.

I really don't think Davis is this bigtime sleeper everyone thinks he is. Especially when you see a guy like Owen Daniels continually fall past him in the draft.

The 49'ers are going to have to use whatever weapons they can on offense and Vernon Davis is their biggest weapon. Who is going to get him the ball is a whole different matter. But Martz has said he plans on using Davis like a WR in more downfield pass plays. I would rate Davis very near the top of TE's this year.

Word on bay area sports talk radio (am 680) is that Vernon is running longer routes and not the typical routes a TE runs. The WR's are running the unders.

And each QB seems to target a different wr. On top of that they are not picking up the offense. I don't like Davis this year although he might get some long catches for TD's.

you guys are insane to think VD doesnt have a monster yr coming up! im reaching for him in every draft, and honestly, i expect him to be top 3 TE, if not #1 overall! hes one of the most gifted players in the league, and i believe Martz realizes this and will use him primarily in his offensive scheme. i look for SFs offense to statistically look like SDs in yrs past, where the RB and TE notch all the major statistics.
