I have accepted that while some people beat the odds by winning the lottery, I had beaten the odds by being pooped on.

I think I'd rather win the lottery. :-B

But the math has to do with 9.5 meters/second not equalling 3.5 miles per hour, right?

To be honest, I don't remember. I just wrote the column last week. I may have posted it when I was trying to figure out the probability.
