Bengal backfield crowded, if not healthy

In spite of recent investments of early draft picks in running backs, the Bengals say they again find themselves in search of another tailback who could help them re-establish the rush offense.

What would seem already to be a crowded position group with a lot of familiar names and big contracts, supplemented with a steady veteran and a promising young runner, could get even chummier.

The Bengals might have Illinois' Rashard Mendenhall and Oregon's Jonathan Stewart on their short list of top prospects.

sign shaun alexander!

on a serious note: bengals already have rudi johnson, kenny watson, perry, and they drafted rookie kenny irons in the 2nd last season. Bengals need to shore up their defensive line more than rb.

while i do agree they have more pressing needs perry (broken leg) and irons (torn acl) plus rudi's injuries there isn't much to go to outside of watson.perry has shown nothing to be impressed with since college and as for irons you cant count on a guy who had acl surgery as a viable backup.they shouldn't take a rb early obviously but if they get a shot at a guy who has some potential later on they should draft him.

I can't imagine the Bungals would take a RB in the first round. Best they go D.
