Rich Gannon is predicting big things for him this year...
Gannon foresees Jackson reaching potential in '08 The former quarterback gushes about the young Vikings signal-caller, but cautions that the third-year player needs to stay healthy and build consistency. By SID HARTMAN, Star Tribune Last update: May 15, 2008 - 8:08 AM
Add former Oakland and MVP quarterback Rich Gannon to the people at Winter Park who look for quarterback Tarvaris Jackson to have a great 2008 season.
"I'm excited. I got a chance to go out there a little bit, and I watched -- really, I wanted to look at Tarvaris and see where he has come in just the one short year -- and I got a chance to watch some film and sit down with [coach Brad] Childress and really look at him, and talk about him, and evaluate him," said Gannon.
"I think he's made great strides. I think he's a very athletic guy, very gifted, and the big thing for him this year is just consistency."
if this happens, ill be buying my ticket to tampa... but i have doubts... athleticism and potential has always been there, he just isn't a great thinking qb.

Vikings center Matt Birk gave QB Tarvaris Jackson a ringing endorsement this week. "This is the year," Birk said. "Do I think he has what it takes? Absolutely!" Birk added that he feels "very good" about Jackson being the team's starter. With the Vikes a chic pick to win the NFC North and make some noise in the playoffs, Jackson will be under the spotlight this season and must show marked improvement from last year's struggles.

While I do not share Gannon's or Birk's optimism, I am still hopeful that Jackson can turn a corner this year and become a quality QB. He is still only entering his third year, and when you compare him to the other QB's in his class that were drafted fairly highly (Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Jay Cutler, Kellen Clemens, Brodie Croyle, Charlie Whitehurst) he doesn't look too bad. Out of that group only Cutler has really flashed any sort of acumen in the pocket and all still have plenty to learn. It probably was not the best time for the Vikings to hitch their wagon to Jackson two years ago, with a lot of their core players being veterans who were poised to win now, but he is the best QB on the roster and deserves to take the reigns to the team in September. During the win streak last year he was pretty solid, limiting mistakes and playing within himself, as long as he is merely average the talent around him should be able to take this team somewhere.
QB Jackson acting the part He's starting to get it. Watch Tarvaris Jackson in practice -- his throws, his decisions, his body language -- and you see the makings of a legitimate starting quarterback in the NFL. By KEVIN SEIFERT, Star Tribune Last update: May 22, 2008 - 7:28 AM
Before heading to his Alabama home this winter, Tarvaris Jackson met with Brad Childress and other Vikings coaches. They instructed him to "keep working," Jackson said, and "to build on what I did last season."
At no point did Childress or anyone else tell him directly that he would be the 2008 starter at quarterback. Were the Vikings hatching a secret plan to acquire a big name starter such as Philadelphia's Donovan McNabb? Or was Jackson so obviously the starter that no announcement was necessary?
Vikings coach Childress gives Jackson vote of confidence Childress doesn't comment on Favre By Rick Alonzo ralonzo@pioneerpress.com Article Last Updated: 07/16/2008 09:00:57 AM CDT
Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson said he feels the Vikings are his team. Coach Brad Childress agrees.
In the face of speculation over where Brett Favre might play in the future, Childress backed Jackson on Tuesday.
"He shouldn't feel otherwise," Childress said of Jackson's assertion. "He did everything in the offseason, to act like, to be — he improved in the (organized team activities). That's part of what that mantle is. You can see that nice evolution."
Childress didn't say much about the Favre speculation because of league rules against tampering. Favre still is under contract with the Packers.
Asked whether he feels set at the quarterback position or whether he might look to upgrade that position, if possible, Childress said: "First of all, I don't really have any comment on that (Favre) because he's the property of the Packers. But I like what I've seen in terms of Tarvaris' progression as a third-year guy, how he's been able to evolve here.
I'm squarely in the Jackson will not get it done camp. He's in the perfect situation too with that teams defense, line and running game. If he doesn't get it done this year he never will.
What do you expect those guys to say in the papers "boy I really hope he doesn't F it up for us". You will never hear them say publicly that their hope at QB for the season is not up to speed. If so, they aren't going to tell us and destroy his confidence.
Just like all these reports about how "so and so looks good coming off the injury or whatever". Crumple that up and throw it in the trash. Judge for yourself in the pre-season as best you can.
They will challenge for that division on the sheer strength of their D and rushing game but you want to see if Jackson can win some games against good teams stuffing 8 in the box.

Agreed. A vote of confidence before we even start exhibition season? Sounds to me like they must not have felt too good about his work in OTAs. Can't say that I have seen enough consistancy from T Wrecks to think he will make it as an NFL QB. The Vikes should still be a lock to win the NFC Norris with DaBears O looking inept, GB self-distructing, and the Lions being, well, the Lions.
I think, therefore I am. I think fantasy, therefore I am unreal?
