In my keeper league we decided to not give draft picks if you didn't have keepers. A 12th place team can keep no one and draft 3 better players and then have a better team than half the league. Keeper league IMO is you have to keep 3 players from year to year. Otherwise it''s not a true keeper, it becomes half keeper half redraft. It also works for the better teams as well. Say the superbowl winner has 2 dominant players and wants to jump in and get a free agent player that would be better than the player that he drafts at the end of the 4th round. There's not an easy way to do it, but after doing it where you have to keep players and no draft picks, it seems to have worked for us. Good luck.

Why would those drafted players be THAT much more valuable then keepers, since they are arguably the 4th best players on their team at best? My one keeper is a standard 4 player where they all have the same value (top picks) so if you only keep 3 then you get a 1st round pick.(2-2 picks, ect). It forces teams to decide whether keeping a guy like Jacobs would be worth more then taking McFadden. We also have a random draw for order for those picks, so the last place team cant assume they will get McFadden if they dont keep their full allotment. And since our keepers are secret until after they are all submitted you dont know how many teams have opted to take the extra pick.

In Our league we get around this (forget where I stole this rule from) by implementing the following rules:

Keepers may be kept a max of 3 years
Players drafted in rounds >= 3 cannot be kept next season.
To keep a player you must sacrifice a draft pick 2 rounds higher than the round in which the kept player was drafted last season.
So if you managed to Take AP in round 5 last year then to keep him this year you have to give up a 3rd round pick and he is NOT eligible for keeper status next season.

Draft position and keeper status follows the player whether traded or dropped. So a player drafted in the 7th round this year will cost a 5th round pick regardless of the number of trades, drop/pick-ups that happened over the course of the year. Also the number of years kept follows the player...so if you kept a player for 2 years and traded him in the 2nd then the new owner can only keep said player for one additonal season before the player is returned to the draft pool.
