Titans, Haynesworth consider deal options
By JIM WYATT • Staff Writer • June 24, 2008

The Titans might honor defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth's request to not be the team's franchise player in 2009, General Manager Mike Reinfeldt said Monday.

Such an agreement would likely come with stipulations attached to Haynesworth's one-year tender that would give the Titans a chance to retain him, however. Left untagged, Haynesworth would become an unrestricted free agent.

"Albert wants to be in Tennessee and I think this would be his best place. So I think that's why we have entertained (that option)," Reinfeldt said. "With the right situation we might consider it.''

With negotiations on a long-term contract going nowhere, agent Chad Speck said last week he'd like Haynesworth to sign his one-year tender and report to training camp if the Titans would agree not to franchise him next season. Coach Jeff Fisher immediately called such a scenario "unlikely.''

That guy is unblockable when healthy. He also seemed to be on his best behavior last year. Guess the Titans are scared to give him a long term deal and just want him to take the 1 year offer.

Haynesworth works to be in camp on time
By JIM WYATT • Staff Writer • June 25, 2008

FRANKLIN — Albert Haynesworth is bald thanks to a haircut gone wrong — fans have told him he now resembles Shaquille O'Neal — and his midsection is thinner thanks to a grueling workout schedule.

"I am starting to see some abs down there,'' he said with a smile. "It's kind of funny, I have never discovered those before. I always had that keg, but now I have that six-pack hopefully.''

Appearing at a charity event for Soles4Souls at the Cool Springs Shoe Carnival on Tuesday, the usually outspoken defensive tackle was more into one-liners than jabs at the Titans for the slow pace of contract negotiations.

There was no threat of a holdout, no blame assigned. He said he wants to be on the field with the Titans when they open training camp July 25.

"I don't want to miss any time,'' he said. "Hopefully all this stuff works out. I always said I wanted to be a Titan and nothing has changed.''

Haynesworth decision due
Deadline is today for 1-year tender or long-term deal
By GARY ESTWICK • Staff Writer • July 15, 2008

Unless the Titans and All-Pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth agree to a long-term contract by 3 p.m. today, the two parties will be limited to signing a one-year tender and will have to wait until after the 2008 regular-season finale to start future negotiations.

That scenario, though, would allow both parties to discover, or prove, what they believe they know: whether Haynesworth's health is a concern, and whether he is worthy of a lucrative contract and the risk that comes with such deals.

If Haynesworth repeats last season's performance — the best so far of his pro career — he would set himself up for a bigger payday than the $7.25-million deal he would earn in a one-year contract in 2008.

If not, especially if injuries spoil his season, the Titans might question how much longer he can play at a high level in the league.

Haynesworth is entering his seventh season and has never played a full 16-game season.
