In high school, I took an electronics course where I built a fake home security console that just had a keypad (that did nothing) and some blinking LED lights. The kit came with stickers that said "AOT" to resemble ADT. I know stores sell fake kits too.
Anyways, for a real suggestion, if you don't want to spring for one of those subscription security services, you should install motion sensor flood lamp/s. Maybe one in the front and one in the back. Then hook up a timer to a TV and a desklamp to turn on in the evening for an hour or two while you're gone to simulate someone being home. Or hire a bum to house-sit while you're away.
