Saints Come Marching In

Postby Dr. Duran Duran » Fri Aug 01, 2008 1:17 am

Eager to create as much pre-season fan enthusiasm as possible in a city not previously exposed to pro football, the Saints obtained three future Pro Football Hall of Famers for their 1967 roster. Who were they and what teams did they play for the previous year?

Time: 6 minutes, 2.04 seconds

Paul Hornung and Jim Taylor, a Louisiana State grid hero, came from Green Bay and defensive end Doug Atkins came in a trade with the Chicago Bears.

Atkins and Taylor were easy, but I didn't think Hornung ever played for them, so I spent forever trying to find another guy on their roster. ;-D

I didn't know he played there either, but as I did some research via the HOF Web site, the three did indeed play there. And, it turns out the Saints only wanted them there because of their notoriety. They needed to build a fan base in a place where football had never been and had to sign some recognizable faces, even if they were past their prime.

PAUL HORNUNG
Class of 1986
Halfback >>> 6-2, 215
(Notre Dame)
1957-1962, 1964-1966 Green Bay Packers

Now I'm curious...where'd you find info that he actually played?

I wonder if he just got brought in but never actually played?

In case you're curious, the info is on the NFL.com site listed under History. You can access any team's individual history there.
