Looks like RBBC for game 1...

Kubiak's rethinking his backfield for Texans
By MEGAN MANFULL Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle

Ahman Green laughed at the mere notion of carrying the ball 25 times in the Texans’ season opener Sept. 7.

He’ll get to that, he said, but it won’t be this week.

“Twenty-five carries, first game, whoo!” Green said. “That’s a little tough.”

Coach Gary Kubiak doesn’t plan to push his luck. When he finally sees Green back on the field, he has no intention of pushing the veteran starter so hard that Green lands right back on the sidelines. So Kubiak is leaving his options open, saying Green, Chris Taylor and Steve Slaton all might get carries against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

With Chris Brown being placed on injured reserve with a sore back Saturday, Kubiak wants to take care of his healthy backs.

“You have to remember that Ahman hasn’t played a lot,” Kubiak said. “To all of a sudden go out there and start and think he is going to carry the ball 25 times this weekend, I think would be a mistake. We could very well play three guys in the game.”

In 2006, Kubiak frequently split the carries among three backs. But that was less common last year, when the team did it only once.

This thing won't shake out until week 3-4. I think Slaton has the edge for putting up the best numbers.

I still stand by my opinion that there is no way Slaton stays healthy in the NFL.

I think this is a situation to avoid. They do have Alex Gibbs, the godfather of zone blocking, but they are just going to be changing it up way to much in terms of the guys they put in.

Commentary: So much for easing Slaton into the mix
By RICHARD JUSTICE Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle
Sept. 3, 2008, 11:50PM

Steve Slaton may be Gary Kubiak’s toughest decision in this opening game.

Where and when does he throw the rookie running back into the mix? What’s the line between daring and foolish?

Kubiak loves the kid’s speed and playmaking ability and his vision and instincts. He loves that Slaton can do things none of his other running backs can do and believes he’s eventually going to be an impact player.

He even sees Slaton as one of the keys to this season. Yes, this season.

“He has a chance to be a heck of a player,” Kubiak said. “How quick he gets to that point may have a lot to do with how far we go. We’re going to count on him.”

Now, about this week in Pittsburgh. Slaton played in enough big games at West Virginia to not be rattled by the environment. What he has never dealt with is a defense that blitzes from every angle and every position.
