I'll take prison. It may be hard and tough and degrading and miserable and horrifying. But at least you have more than dolphins and exotic birds to talk to. Plus I don't like seafood and unidentifiable foods that much.
For starters, the real castaway was only four years, making the decision easy.
Now, the little unspoken question mark here is, "What kind of hard time are we talking about?" If we're talking about a daily gang rape... gimme the 20 years on an island any day, thank you very much.
If you're talking about a cell, prison food, an occasional fight, TV, prison football and a weight room... well, that's just kinda like taking a year off of work. Hard time and Club Med kinda rolled into one and sure... gimme the year.

I am going to look a little more long term at this.
When i get out of prison, i will still be in my 20s.
When i get off the island, i will be in my 40s (still relativly young, but middle-aged).
When i get out of prison, my friends and family will still be the same.
When i get off the island, some of my friends and family would have all changed and moved on with their lives.
When i get of of prison, i would be considered a low-life. No white collar job. My degrees wasted. I would be stuck working at a blue collar job. For the rest of my life this would follow me.
When i get off the island, i would be a celebrity. I could right a book, sell the movie rights, ect. I could live off the experince for the rest of my life.
