DEFENSE!

I am pretty new to fantasy football, but have a fair amount of fantasy baseball experience. I was just wondering how important the Defense ends up being, and when in the draft i should end up choosing. I am in a league that uses whole teams instead of IDP. Who do you guys recommend picking up as my defensive team, and when?

Opinions vary, but most will tell you to draft your kicker & team defense in the last 2 rounds. They are very inconsistent from year to year & especially week to week, for the most part. And they can easily be found on the waiver wire during the season....not like QB, RB, WR, & TE. Some people won't draft a D...then just play matchups each week and pick up different D's weekly. It really depends. In a 15-16 round draft, you'll see the elite defenses going as early as the 11th and 12th rounds. I usually like taking my DEF in the 3rd to last round so I can get a good/decent DEF; this may get you a DEF like Seattle, Dallas, or your NYG. Then I take a flyer pick in the 2nd to last round, and a kicker in the last round.

There will be a few undrafted DEF that you'll be able to use for good matchups and bye weeks.

To reiterate an earlier point, we had a guy last year take CHI in the 5th or 6th round of a ten-team draft, based off 2006. They ended up being serviable but no where near worth a pick that high. I grabbed SD off waivers in week 2 or 3 or something and they were awesome.

The other posts seem like good rules of thumb to follow.
