Just got a new laptop and I want to make sure it's protected against the baddies out there who want to destroy me. For those of you with all the wizard computer skills, what do you recommend as a good Antivirus protection software? I have McCaffee right now, but I have no idea how good it is or how well it will protect. I want the strongest thing I can get for the best price if possible.
There are several good ones around. I've used both McAffee and Norton Antivirus software packages and both are good at protecting your computer. The only knock on Norton is it is a resource hog so.....
I've also heard good things about Kaspersky's antivirus. I have several clients using it and absolutely rave about it.
avg 8 is really good, but much more of a hog than 7.5.
avast 4.x is pretty good too. although, i think it has less bells and whistles than avg. but it is a better prog and less of a resource hog.
antivir is the least robust in terms of options. but less is more here. less false positives. better detection. the only thing that i have found that it is lacking is an email scanner. but i don't generally use outlook/thunderbird/eudora. so that's not an issue for me. could be for others.
i'm recommending antivir for a/v. combo of a-squared and spybot for anti-spy. comodo firewall for firewall. that should be a very nice suite of free progs that will keep you clean like a jimmy hat!

Whatever you do, only use 1 antivirus and 1 firewall. Running 2 at a time is not a good thing.
I've been a fan of ZoneAlarm for a free firewall.
Multiple adware and spyware removers is fine.
CCleaner is another program that I'd recommend.
Auslogics has better program for defragging than the one packaged with your PC.
All Free.

you need to be careful with things like ccleaner and eusing free registry cleaner. any time you have some mindless program dorking around in your registry it can be bad. on two separate occasions i had either ccleaner or eusing delete a registry entry that removed my wireless card. it happened in vista ultimate x64 and xp pro x64. maybe it's the 64 bit flavors, i don't know. but i won't allow anything in my registry anymore. i'll clean it up manually.

opps, yeah, ccleaner is not for everyone. If you use it, make sure to say yes to the backup.

I had Norton on this laptop but the subscription had expired. I uninstalled it and got antivir. Nice and compact and scanned much more quickly. Thanks for the tip.
