Hall of Famer Gene Upshaw Dies

Postby Dr. Duran Duran » Thu Aug 21, 2008 4:33 am

Sadly, I just learned that Raiders Hall of Famer and NFLPA executive director Gene Upshaw died today. He was quietly battling pancreatic cancer for some time and passed away early this morning. Upshaw was 63 years old.

Maybe it will actually become an organization that represents the players' interests and not the owners'.

My opinion of his NFLPA days aside Upshaw was a helluva player and a very significant part of the league's history. RIP Gene. :,-(

I heard he knew about the cancer but kept it private. Did not want anyone else -- particularly the public -- to know.

Regardless, RIP Gene Upshaw.

RIP Mr Upshaw.

Here's to hoping that you latter actions as pres of PA will be picked up and run with like a fumble-rooskie that your teammates made so infamous.

Wow - a real shocker! What a great player he was - one of the most dominant OL of his era - him and Art Shell were legendary together. RIP.

His outstanding 15-season playing career was entirely with the Raiders and included two Super Bowl wins and seven Pro Bowl appearances. Upshaw's biography was posted on the front page of the Hall of Fame Web site Thursday along with his enshrinement speech from 1987.

Upshaw was also named to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-time Team in 1994. He teamed with fellow Hall of Famers Jim Otto and Art Shell to form one of the most celebrated offensive lines in recent history.

He was the only player to play in Super Bowls in three different decades _ the 1960s, '70s and '80s.

In 1983, he became executive director of the players' association and guided it through the 1987 strike that led to replacement football. By 1989, the players had a limited form of freedom, called Plan B, and in 1993, free agency and a salary cap were instituted.
