Noob in need of Last Minute Advice

Postby ki4wej » Wed Aug 27, 2008 11:31 am

Ok so I have been a football fan for years but never had "time" for FF, until this year! I've read up a little bit on the strategy of the draft and have read a few articles on the change that is amongst us. I'm the 3rd pick overall in the first round. I'm thinking Brady, followed by WR1 and WR2, then go for RB1. With the abundance of RB's in the league I think I can pick up a decent sleeper like Calhoun that late in the draft and make out with some great WR's. I know I'm taking a gamble with Calhoun's health, but he is with Detroit and I don't think any of their QB's have what it takes to keep their wide outs productive. Calhoun hasn't had much of a chance to show what he can do because of injury but I feel he may have it, after all Detroit typically has very productive backs. So give it to me straight on, what do you think?

I'd say absolutely not.
With pick 3 you really need to take a stud RB. Adrian Peterson, SJax, Westbrook, Addai, LT should all go ahead of Brady IMO.
If you really want Brady, I'd try and trade down 2-4 spots. I just can't see picking him at #3 overall. Even at the 7 spot if someone takes Brady ahead of you, you can get one of the RB's I listed, Manning (if you are really QB crazy) or Gore.
Conventional wisdom says to load up on RB's and it's good advice. Take a RB with your first round pick *for sure at the 3 spot* then you can start to be a little more flexible.
Generally it's easier to find servicable WR's to fill in roster spots any given week than RB's which is why you don't want to screw yourself with weak RBs.
This all does depend on your league settings, though.

I agree with script.

Do not draft Brady that early. In almost every FF pool out there, a stud RB is the way to go.
LT, AP will go 1 and 2 (if the guys in your pool know their stuff) and number 3 i would say hands down would be Westbrook. You can't pass up on a stud back. SJackson is a solid pick too however it will take him a few weeks to get back in order since he held out. Addai is solid to. Take Westy with your pick. 2nd round comes back to you, you can then take a look at the field and either pick up another solid RB, maybe a top qb still (Bree's, Romo, Anderson) or a solid stud WR (depending on what the train might be at the time)

If you want a solid sleeper RB wise, take Kevin Smith in Detroit. You heard it here first as i feel he will post solid numbers.
