The shock and pain fade over time. But that's the dangerous thing. Someone in another thread already mentioned that the war on terror is pretty much over. Nothing is over.
As we remember the victims of 9/11, it's important to keep in mind that, while many innocent people lost their lives that day, many of them lost their lives not while trying to escape the danger, but while running towards it. Many of the firefighters and police knew they stood little chance of getting out of the towers alive, but they climbed on anyway.
The thing is, those folks were trained to save lives. The people on Flight 93 were just average joes like the rest of us. Disturbed from their regular lives, they reacted brilliantly, perhaps saving dozens, if not hundreds of lives on the ground.
It's sacrifices like these, by trained professionals and average citizens alike, that show me that we will not fall to terrorism. Not today.
That's what I'll always remember about this day. Not that some fools got one over on America. But that America will not be destroyed by fear. In the end, even the common man will rise up. That's a message of hope that we can take from this attack.
Sad day. Never will forget where I was or trying to get a hold of my buddy. He was on his way to work in the WTC that morning but not there yet... Of course I didn't find this out until later that night.

Yeah my adopted brother(much older than me)worked at the Pentagon and actually had an office very near where the plane hit. He was home sick in bed that day though.
Nice post Knapp. That's what I will remember most are the heroes that day. It astonishes me that a lot of firemen, police officers, etc. will never have the opportunity (fortunately) to use the drastic skills they have learned, but when they have to it comes to them so naturally. It's a gift and a skill that continues to fascinate me. A willingness to put others' interests above your own and it lays dormant for years, possibly your entire life. But when it comes time to use it, it's there. And it's wonderful. Thank God for these people.
