FF Scoring Clarification: Carolina vs. Chicago

Issue: Waht would be the basis for computing Carolina's Defense Fantasy Score:

According to Yahoo STATTRACKER scoring result for "CAROLINA DEFENSE" is as follow:

11pts Allowed (4)
1 sack (1)
2 fumble recovery (4)

Total Fantasy = 9 Pts

However, our league change my fantasy score -- against yahoo stattracker scoring system -- and is only giving me 6 pts for Carolina Defense -- stating that yahoo made a mistake since the final score was Carolina 20 - Chicago 17.

My contention -- the discrepancy was the result of a block punt return for a touchdown -- which has nothing to do with Carolina' DEFENSE (specifically) on the field -- ALLOWING points againts Chicago' Offense. I believe Yahoo is correct to base their scoring on 11 pts allowed by the DEFENSE -- not the final total score of 17 pts (Chicago) for the same reason as stated above.

a lot of leauges have the def position as def/speacial teams. that might explain it

You are scored on DST, or Defense/Special Teams. By your logic, it also doesn't make sense to get points for punt or kickoff return touchdowns. If you don't like the fact that they blend Defense and Special Teams, you may need to customize your league next season. For what it's worth, Carolina's special teams line is what screwed up, allowing the Bears to block the kick. So it should be a ding on the D/ST.

The point you make is definitely valid and something that has been discussed for decades. You can have your defense pitch a shutout and not allow the offense to score 1 point. But if the offense throws 3 INT's for TD's...that's 21 "points allowed" even though the D/ST gave up 0. It kinda doesn't make sense, but that's the way it's been scored in every league I've ever been in. Bottom line is that "points allowed" is the total points the other team scored. Not how many points the D/ST actually gave up when they were on the field.

I think you are right to question the rule...but not the commish's ruling. That's the way the scoring was set before the season so any questions about the scoring should've been asked before the season started. If this is a league where you will play next year, you could bring it up again in the offseason. Although I still don't think it would help...only because I don't think that any site offers that type of scoring as an option.

Hello BrickWall. I agree with what the brothers have said to you for advice.

I've been a commissioner for about 9 years now, and I run two leagues. Your rules have been implemented before you even held your draft. I see where you have a problem. In my early years we also had the same rules, but we changed it to reflect only opponents offensive points.

I've always found it's nice to tweak the scoring each year. So I would tell your commish that you would like to see the settings changed to "Opponent Offensive Points Only." Hopefully, your league has the options to change the settings.
