Pretty simple - I think they are better than Texas Tech, Florida, Oklahoma State, Georgia, etc., but I'm not going to say they're a "lock" at #5, either. The reality of today's college football landscape is that every team in the top 25 could really beat every other team. There's probably a pretty decent argument to be made to rank USC #10 and to rank them #5.
I've only got them ranked a spot or two ahead of most everybody else, so I don't think that's too far out of whack. If I had them at #1-3, then I think the argument begins to get shaky, but I'm comfortable where I have them. And I wouldn't argue with your rankings either, AFF. I think it's becoming a real crapshoot these days.

Pretty much in line with what Knapp said, I feel they're the 4th best team in the country. They got caught napping against Oregon State, but I would take my chances with USC against nearly everyone else in the country if the game's played at a neutral site. That 4-7 quartet I have though is pretty interchangeable, as I don't feel one of those teams really stands above the rest.

Yep. Nobody really stands out all that much so far. Not three weeks ago I called Texas a "paper tiger," and here I have them #1 now. Everyone is vulnerable these days, and not one team in these rankings should ever be considered a "lock" at their rank.
Well, I guess I should rephrase my questioning then. If Texas Tech, USC, and Penn St. all win out and Texas and Alabama don't, who would you put in the National Championship if it were up to you? Because as of now, you both have USC ahead of Texas Tech, yet both winning out would result in a 1 loss Pac 10 team getting in ahead of an undefeated Big 12 team.
Impossible question to answer because so much can change between now and then and I will have a different feel at that time for who I feel the best two teams are then I do now, not to mention all the hypotheticals included. But, to answer the Texas Tech question, I would put them in because that would mean they strung together 4 straight wins against Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma plus a win in the Big 12 title game. I couldn't argue with that. I am lower on them than some because of their cake schedule so far with really only one decent opponent (Nebraska).
Flesh, I don't see my rankings as all that static. If USC earns their spot at the end of the season, so be it, but if they play a weaker schedule than, say, Oklahoma State, and both win out, I have zero problem bumping OSU up over USC at that time.
If you've looked at my rankings all year, I've jumped teams over other teams several times, and I've dropped different teams less than others after losses. As stricken by parity as we are, to my mode of thinking we're still in a feeling-out phase of the season. We really don't know all that much about what we're seeing from a lot of teams.
Flesh, after reading your comments in the game talk thread, I have serious questions about your ability to question MY rankings. If you didn't grasp that TT over KU wasn't an upset, despite what some Vegas oddsmaker says, I think you have a lot to learn about college football.

A couple things Knapp:
1) I picked Tech to win that game with a lot of confidence points. I was just trying to point out that Tech should get credit for what they did. I also said that it was technically an upset. No matter how bad you think Kansas may be, I was right about that. It was technically an upset.
2) I wasn't trying to question your ability to rank or the validity of your rankings. I was trying to understand why you put USC up that high because I was genuinely interested. I apologize if I came across as being critical of you, but that really wasn't my intent.
