Defense/ST scoring

Postby Bad Newz Kennels » Fri Nov 14, 2008 5:43 pm

I'm not the comish in this league, but in it's 2nd year there has been much discussion on the d/st scoring. Most seem to be displeased with the set-up, this is the only league I've ever been in so I'd be interested to hear your thoughts as we may push for a vote on the matter next season.

This is a full point PPR league for what it's worth.

- Sacks
Award 2 points for each 1 sack.
- Safeties
Award 4 points for each Safety.

These are higher than normal; most leagues are 1 pt a sack and 2 pts a safety.
- All Points Allowed
Award 10 points for all points allowed in the range of 0 to 0.
Award 8 points for all points allowed in the range of 1 to 10.
Award 6 points for all points allowed in the range of 11 to 20.
Award 4 points for all points allowed in the range of 21 to 30.
Award -4 points for all points allowed in the range of 40 to 100.
Award -2 points for all points allowed in the range of 31 to 39.
- Net Yards Allowed (Pass + Rush - Sack Yds)
Award 10 points for net yards allowed (pass + rush - sack yds) in the range of 0 to 110.
Award 8 points for net yards allowed (pass + rush - sack yds) in the range of 111 to 200.
Award 6 points for net yards allowed (pass + rush - sack yds) in the range of 201 to 250.
Award -2 points for net yards allowed (pass + rush - sack yds) in the range of 300 to 450.
Award -4 points for net yards allowed (pass + rush - sack yds) in the range of 451 to 999.

These are also pretty normal; personally I like to have a greater variation in them... my feeling is that if I'm going to give a defense 6 points for a TD, I should be penalizing them 6 pts for giving one up. But how your league has it set up is probably pretty normal.

The ordering of the defenses also looks pretty reasonable; some of the teams move up or down one to three spots depending upon individual league settings, but they generally look like the defenses that are doing well in my leagues.

The main thing is just that your defenses will score more compared to the other positions. The defense rankings themselves don't look too weird, they seem about in line with how the defenses are ranked for "standard" scoring.

Although one might say that the scoring is too in favor for defense, since everyone will have that advantage of a high-scoring defense, it should be fine.

Everything looks pretty kosher other than the sacks and safeties being double what they usually are. Getting those 3-7 points per game of extra points makes the scoring higher, but it doesn't set too many of the startable defenses apart from each other.

I'm guessing people are mainly pissed because they would have liked to have better Ds with the high scoring possibilities, but oh well right? :-? ;-D

Scoring may be slightly of in some categories but overall how the scoring is playing out in terms of ranking is in line with most other leagues.
