Steelers/Chargers Game (possible scoring ?'s)

Postby mariners100 » Sun Nov 16, 2008 10:01 pm

In case people didn't see the end of the Steelers/Chargers game, there was about 7 seconds left and the Chargers pulled the latteral around to try to score a TD going 80 yards.

There were two laterals, a fumble, and a TD scored by Troy P.

Here is the description from

(:05) (Shotgun) 17-P.Rivers pass short middle to 21-L.Tomlinson to SD 24 for 3 yards. Lateral to 89-C.Chambers to SD 26 for 2 yards (43-T.Polamalu). FUMBLES (43-T.Polamalu), RECOVERED by PIT-43-T.Polamalu at SD 12. 43-T.Polamalu for 12 yards, TOUCHDOWN. The Replay Assistant challenged the backward pass ruling, and the play was REVERSED. (Shotgun) 17-P.Rivers pass short middle to 21-L.Tomlinson, dead ball declared at SD 26 for 5 yards. PENALTY on SD-21-L.Tomlinson, Illegal Forward Pass, 0 yards, enforced at SD 5.

The scoring at the time of the play was a TD for the Steelers but was then reversed for no defensive TD. Even though it didn't seem to be a illegal forward pass, the NFL is not changing the official ruling... so no TD.

In case anyone in your league has the Steelers D... hopefully you won't lose this week cause of this.

Steelers D line should be: 2 sacks, 2 INTs, 1 FF.

This is really interesting one that has implications to Vegas bettors and to fantasy, obviously.

PIT was a 5 point favorite in this game. Anyone who bet PIT ends up taking it in the shorts from their bookie courtesy of this REF crew. 8-o

The game is over, and the league has already ruled that the TD does not count, However, Elias Sports Bureau will look at this one on film and may make some updates later in the week on how the play is officially scored for the permanent league stats. I've never heard of a case where they have counted a TD in the statistics that didn't count in the game score, but if there was ever a case for it, this looks to be it. It seems the replays clearly show that this should have been a PIT DEF TD.
