As several have pointed out, most points for determines your teams scoring potential. If you've scored more points for the year, you're more likely to score more again. And regardless of how you look at it, fantasy football is about scoring points.
Most points against determines your strength of schedule. If your opponents have scored more points against you than against the other contenders, than you've had a tougher go of it and still managed an equal record, thus you should be more deserving of the spot.
We also have other tie-breakers after these two, but those are more along the lines of flipping a virtual coin in the longshot chance that teams are still tied after the first two.
