Coaches want to move up signing day

Postby deerayfan072 » Sun Jan 11, 2009 7:47 pm

The American Football Coaches Association has forwarded a proposal for an early signing day for college football recruits and it wil be reviewed by conference commissioners this Thursday.

"We're looking for an early signing day in the third week of December," Rob Ianello, Notre Dame assistant and head of the AFCA FBS Assistant Coaches Committee, said at the coaches convention in Nashville. "There are more than 1,000 verbal committments right now, and about 15 per school. Why not sign them? Is it a reservation or a committment? What we're seeing is oversigning and late switches. An earlier signing day would also be cost effective.

Wouldn't that significantly cut down on the time coaches have to recruit? There are a lot of gems out there that people haven't seen because they don't have time with the season underway. Moving signing day up so much would just make more kids slip through the cracks, I would think.

I think the coaches want it moved up because traditionally, this is the timeframe when recruits get "stolen" or get cold feet. (The DL Young that changed from KU to NU, and last week, back to KU.) I wouldnt think it would lessen recruiting time, it would just change the focus from having to ensure commitments to concentrating on finding the uncovered gems you're refering to or looking towards next year's class.

I just hope if they do move it up, that they get the desired affect. I dont want them to keep thinking they have to move it up until one day they're signing up freshman or showing up at Junior High's like college basketball is now allowed to do. :-o
