I always thought the ground couldn't cause a fumble. Maybe I wasn't as aware in the old days but I always thought that was a catch. He maintained control all the way to the ground. The ground caused him to fumble.

He surely had control. Unfortunately the rule requires that he maintain control all the way through the tackle, when contact is made by the defender as the catch is made. Clear as mud?
