BS, but the right call...

Postby WaCougMBS » Tue Jan 20, 2009 12:04 pm

In the Cardinals/Eagles NFC championship game, a kickoff was ruled out of bounds even though subsequent replays showed that it never went out of bounds. The officials on the field, however, ruled that the play could not be challenged by Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt. What is the actual NFL rule governing the decision made by the official(s)?

On a kickoff is a player is out of bounds but touches a ball that is inbound, the kick is considered out of bounds

As per the NFL rules digest: When a kickoff goes out of bounds between the goal lines and is touched last by receiving team, it is receiver’s ball at out-of-bounds spot.

Since the official (incorrectly) ruled that the kickoff was grazed/touched by a member of the receiving team AND that it went out of bounds, the play was dead as soon as he blew his whistle to this extent...
