Thoughts on keepers

Postby Achmed » Sat Feb 07, 2009 11:22 pm

I have been trying to do some off-season trading to shore up my RB2. So far no luck. Now I am wondering about trying to strengthen my WRs instead. Here is the rationale:

Players I'm thinking I keep: Rodgers, MJD, McFadden, Marshall, Welker, and Grant/Royal. I'm leaning toward Royal because it looks as though I am drafting top 4. Thus I could get either one of the top 3 RBs coming out, or else just pick Grant back up. I hate to give up on McFadden just yet, and I know for a fact one of the guys drafting ahead of me will take Rodgers if I drop him as he actually has respectable RBs and WRs but total garbage at QB.

The last place team just came under new ownership and has a backfield consisting of KSmith, LJ and nothing else. I was going to see if Grant and Royal together would net me Jennings. I'd clearly prefer Jennings over Royal at WR3. Then I hope that one of the rookie RBs falls to me. If so, great. If not, I pray and look elsewhere. RBs probably falling back in to the draft will be JLewis, ChTaylor, LWashington, MBush, EGraham, Sproles, FlxJones or Mendenhall, Fargas, Rice. So it's not going to be a great group. Therein lies the risk.

Being PPR, WRs are gold. Would you roll the dice on this trade? If not, do you agree with my premise of keeping Royal and grabbing the rookie or Grant again?

12-teams, 6 keepers
PPR; 1 pt for 20yds rush/rec, 40 pass; 4 pts td pass
start 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1RB/WR, 1K, 1D/ST; TE counts as WR

QB- Rodgers, Thigpen
RB- MJD, Grant, McFadden, Rice, BrJackson, Fargas
WR- Marshall, Welker, Royal, Ward, DJax, Holt
K- Prater
D/ST- GB
12-team PPR, start 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 1 flex (RB/WR/TE), 1D/ST
Unlimited keepers, but more than 6 cost draft picks, starting w 1st Rnd

Rodgers
MJD, CJ1K, McFadden
Jennings, LFitz, VJax, Wallace

While I shy away from having a QB and RB from the same team, indications are that Ryan Grant will continue to lead the Packers running game after putting together the 6th best numbers for an NFC rusher last season. I would definitely keep him over Royal. Generally, a good rule of thumb is to think about who you would draft higher. For reference, the Cafe just completed their Extremely Early Mock draft. In that scenario, Ryan Grant was selected with 2.08 pick while Eddie Royal was picked at 5.10. So, as far as that debate goes, I would keep Grant.

As far as your trade goes, if you can trade for Jennings, go for it. Packaging players is a nice conceptual idea, but rarely does it work. The guy doesn't have any marquee players and he isn't like to trade away his only one. I think you're greatly undervaluing Grant in this scenario, but it's your franchise. ;-D

Bottom line: I would keep Rodgers, MJD, Grant, McFadden, Marshall, and Welker. Draft the best WR available in the draft. If that's Royal, so be it. But chances are... it won't be.

I'd keep Grant over Royal, and I don't like the idea of trading for Jennings because it leaves you too thin at RB. PPR or not, you still have to have depth at RB in order to consistently contend. I'd keep shopping for a better RB2, but as-is, I'd pass on this potential trade and keep Grant... ;-D
