BusinessWeek ranks Portland at top of "unhappiest cities" list

Portland has found itself at the top of another list, but not the kind you can brag about.

A staggering jump in calls to a crisis intervention hotline, high rates of depression and divorce have landed Portland atop BusinessWeek's list of unhappiest American cities. The magazine looked at a range of factors - crime, unemployment, and cloudy days (an average of 222 a year in case you're wondering) - and concluded that the Rose City is one miserable place.

The Oregon suicide and drug and alcohol help lines received 71% more calls in January 2009 than it did the previous January, including more calls from people having suicidal thoughts because of severe financial stress, Storm said.

Oregon has always been at the top of the list for depression, divorce rate, and suicide so this doesn't really surprise me. Seeing Portland, Oregon at the top of this list though....please.

I saw that. Lists like this bug me sometimes,they simply take numbers, ranks, and stats and then make a list like this. There's no denying the hard numbers but to outright call Portland "America’s Unhappiest City" is laughable. I can think of a lot of cities I'd be much more unhappy in....a few are further down that list and many more that didn't make the cut.

Why is Oregon so depressing? I thought it was beautiful there and the people were pretty decent. Is it the weather, which is a factor in Seattle (I hear).

No way man, the sunny summer days here are why we suffer through the gloom. I've lived Oregon for the better part of 13 years and have never been lonely....or at all depressed.
