Barber III for Portis?

Postby Minnesota Guy » Sun Mar 15, 2009 12:35 pm

I am in a 10 man keeper league. We each get to carry over 1 player from our team last year. My keeper as of now is Marion Barber III. We get 1 pt every 10 yards rushing/receiving and 6pts per TD. Should I trade Barber III for Clinton Portis? Give me your guys' thoughts?

I have Portis ranked much higher going into 2009 -- so I would do this deal. As you only keep one, you can make your 1st round pick a younger guy that can be a longer-term keeper.

I like the way you think my man. That is exactly what I was thinking. Something about Dallas this year too just scares me. Plus their O-line is getting really old, not to mention Felix digging into his stats.

Flozell is the only one who is old; Gurode, Davis, Columbo & Kosier are all only 30 years old, I wouldn't consider anyone really old except Flozell and I expect to see a LT to be drafted...But it's an easy question, I'd take Portis over Barber, less competition for carries, even though I still see Barber racking up plenty of TD's Portis is going to carry the load until he breaks down.

Sorry, but I disagree with you guys. I have M. Barber ranked higher in all formats. With T.O. gone, I expect Dallas to pound the football more with Barber. You just can't count on Portis down the stretch. He will start off the season fine, then he will suffer through 4 or 5 nagging injuries. He started to show signs of wear and tear last year and I think this could be the year we really start to see him break down. When he got a heavy workload last year, he couldn't make it through the year healthy. I will take the younger back and the guy who scores more Td's and that would be Barber.

Pretty much my line of thinking as well. I'd rather have Barber.

Love the feedback guys, but I went with my gut and chose to pull the trigger. Since we only get to keep a player for a max of 3 years I wasn't too worried about the age of Portis since he should have atleast 1 or 2 more years of solid production. I do agree with you about him breaking down later in the year last year, but hopefully with a slightly lesser of a workload will keep him more fresh through out the season. Also, I just have a bad feeling that Dallas is going to struggle next year. The whole second half of last year was an absolute nightmare for them. Absolutely no production from anybody. Also, the toe injury can sometimes be very nagging. The last thing Jones wants to do is wear down Barber with a bunch of carries inbetween the 20's. That will be Felix's area this year.

Just my two cents. Thanks guys!!

On the contrary, last year wasn't the first year Portis was getting a heavy workload, in his two seasons with Denver he had over 270 carries twice, and he had 3 seasons of over 320+ carries with Washington already, carrying a full load is nothing new to him and other then 2006 you can't really say he's missed many games.

We can't predict injuries, guys like Westbrook can be battered up every year but still perform, and Portis is coming off 1700 total yards and 9 TD's, and there still isn't anyone to steal any carries...Dallas will be pounding the ball but they already stated they want every back to be involved, and Barber should be closing games out for the most part.

I'd just trust Portis in 4 quarters over Barber in the 4th or 2nd half, I can't rank Portis as if he's going to be hurt because he rarely misses games, but even being banged up last year 1700 yards is something Barber just won't reach this year as much as I like him.
