Portis vs. Slaton

Postby djadrock » Tue Mar 31, 2009 6:13 am

I am in a non-PPR league. (20yds/1pt; 1TD/6pts) We only keep two keepers who must be from different positions. I already have Fitzy for my WR :)

Currently, the only RB worth keeping that I have is Slaton. Another owner is offering me Portis. I have 2 2nd round and 2 3rd round picks. Should I offer a trade for Portis or gamble with Slaton?

I think that I would wait until after the NFL draft and see what both teams do with there picks. From what I have read recently is that Houston is hoping that Chris Brown is healthy this year and he will be the short yardage / goal line back, which could hurt Slatons numbers. But with Portis he has alot of miles on him and is always hurts and don't think that you can depend on him for an entire season. I think in a keeper league I would stick with Slaton for now and ride him out and you can than either stick with him or draft another rb. Good luck.

Agree with DB which is odd as I would draft Portis ahead of Slaton in a redraft league. I would take the gamble though that Slaton will be a good to very good fantasy RB for the next several years. If Houston just grabs a pounder then he loses goalline but still puts up decent numbers. Slightly risky with your league scoring at 1/20.

The 1 pt/20 yards is why I consider moving for Portis. It is a heavy TD league with those numbers. So, basically it comes down to who will get more TDs. I think with my picks I can draft a replacement for Portis if I do trade. Although, if Houston sticks with Brown, Slaton is good to go because Brown is a gimp.

I prefer durability in my RB's -- especially in a keeper league. Portis is only 27 but he seems on the verge of a collapse imo.

It seems everybody (including the Texans) is trying to find ways to criticize Slaton -- but his stats don't lie. Houston may go with a RB in the NFL Draft, but I highly doubt they will address that position with the #15 overall pick, and the top RB's should be long gone by their second round pick.

Houston's looking at guys like Iowa's Shonn Greene or Liberty's Rashad Jennings in the 2nd/3rd round maybe. They aren't much of a threat to Slaton's #1 status with the Texans.

If Chris Brown is the #2 on the Texans' depth chart, I'd absolutely love Slaton in '09 -- Brown won't last the first month of the season if his track record is taken into consideration.

Stay with Slaton; I'd say 1,750 total yards and 8 TD's are probable numbers for him. Portis might have better stats, but in a keeper league Slaton has more value long-term.
I have the doomsday device!

Slaton, especially it might cost you something to get Portis.

Houston is going to be better this year and Slaton will benefit from it too.
