St. Louis Rams trade for Atlanta WR Laurent Robinson

Postby madaslives911 » Tue Apr 07, 2009 6:51 pm

The Rams need help at the wide receiver position and got some Monday by trading for Atlanta wideout Laurent Robinson. The Rams acquired Robinson by switching draft positions with the Falcons in both the fifth and sixth rounds. They didn’t lose any picks; they just changed positions in both rounds with Atlanta.

The Rams get Atlanta’s fifth-round (No. 160 overall) and sixth-round (No. 196 overall) picks; Atlanta gets the Rams’ fifth-round (No. 138 overall) and sixth-round (No. 176 overall) picks.

This is a good trade for St. Louis. They pretty much traded nothing for a guy that at the very worst will be their #3-4 wideout. Robinson struggled with drops and injuries big time in Atlanta but does not lack talent.

I actually like what St. Louis is doing. They are not in complete rebuild mode but quietly piecing things together.

What happened to Robinson last year? After his rookie season he seemed like a potential star and a guy that should develop into at least a starting player. Now he only goes for an upgrade in the 5th round of the draft? A couple years ago the guy was an early 3rd round pick...

Change is the story in Atlanta and it makes me wonder if Laurent Robinson is damaged goods in some way, or if it's just that he didn't fit there anymore. Either way seems like a bigtime bargain for St. Louis. Avery looked very good last year before getting injured, but really the WR spots across from him are going to be up for grabs in future seasons.

Update: Just looked at Robinson's injury history and came up with this:

preseason- tailbone injury, lost starting job
week 3 - knee strain out for almost 8 weeks
week 11 - hamstring injury coming off the knee injury put him on IR

Guy was a starting player going into the 2008 season after a solid rookie year, now they trade him away after he had a string of bad luck and injuries. He didn't play a healthy game in all of 2008.

Which is why I agree that this is a steal for St. Louis. Swapping spots in the fifth and sixth? That's basically giving up nothing. And they get a guy with sub-4.4 speed and good height (6'3") who could turn into a great player. Why Atlanta would give up on him after one injury-plagued season and for so little is beyond me.

No offense, but this sounds like a bunch of guys in Keeper/Dynasty leagues who are overvaluing a guy.

I never heard of him.

I wouldn't say he's being overvalued here. Definitely a guy to keep an eye on. But I would agree this info is more important for dynasty players.

Did you pay attention to the fantasy world a couple seasons ago? That's when he really made his big "splash". He showed some flashes of potentially being a solid NFL receiver but injuries kept him out this year...he's only going into his 3rd season so he's got plenty of room to grow and he's an excellent athlete.

With him going to a team that has nothing worth mentioning at WR other than Avery, the kid has a real shot at a starting position which at least gives him some value fantasy wise. He won't be draftable as a starting fantasy WR or anything, but could be a late round flier and a potential dynasty type player to grab.
