Jets are courting Dallas Cowboys' Miles Austin 12:39 AM CDT on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News tarcher@dallasnews.com
IRVING – The Cowboys are counting on wide receiver Miles Austin being a major player in their offense in 2009, but the New York Jets might have something to say about that.
According to sources, the Jets have scheduled to meet with Austin, a restricted free agent, Thursday and Friday.
The Cowboys gave Austin a $1.545 million tender offer that would require a team to give up a second-round pick as compensation if the Cowboys did not match. The restricted free-agent signing period ends on April 17. Four restricted free agents have signed offer sheets this off-season, but their teams matched the offers.
If the Jets sign Austin, the Cowboys would have a week to match the offer. New York's second-round selection is No. 52, one spot behind the Cowboys' first pick of the draft.
Owner and general manager Jerry Jones praised Austin two weeks ago at the NFL owners meetings, saying he would not have released Terrell Owens if he did not have Austin, an undrafted free agent in 2006. Despite not being signed, Austin has been a regular at Valley Ranch since last season ended.
Austin, a New Jersey native, caught 13 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns last season. Two knee injuries knocked Austin out of four games, but he showed big-play potential against Green Bay with two catches for 115 yards and a touchdown.
Dallas won't let him get away, at worst he'll just get a contract sooner then what Jerry wanted to, but he's planning on him starting so that 2nd rounder would do no good...He'll be in Dallas for sure, our WR core would be shot to hell without him.

Miles Austin has got to be worth a second round pick for some team considering what he has shown on the field in actual games. #52 in the draft is really not all that much to give up for a promising player like Austin. I could even see someone in the NFC East offering up Austin a lucrative contract just so that Dallas would have to match it or be harmed.
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but why wouldn't Dallas pony up the additional $300,000 and give him the 1.8 million first round tender? Did that change or what?
I think because Jerry knew nobody would bite with a 1st round tender, putting him at a 2nd at least gives you some options, and for a team without a 1st rounder, having two 1st would be nice.
I think the Jets interest is legitimate, and depending on if Jerry wants to gamble and trade for someone like Jason Peters(which would take both 2nds) I could see him giving it a thought...It would be imperative that it was before Holt signed with anyone though, we would need a stop gap in the meantime because depth is extremely thin after him.
Austin is a Jersey guy, so I'm sure NY did their homework on him...But reading all these articles about the poison pill that they could possibly use, makes me hesitant as to whether or not he'll be in Dallas.

Agreed. I can't see them letting him go and starting from scratch. He is a great deep threat who is improving every year.

Forget about Miles Austin April 13, 2009 By Rich Cimini Daily News
The Jets' courtship of Cowboys WR Miles Austin is "dead," according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
So much for that flirtation.
Evidently, the Jets came to their senses, realizing it would've been crazy to part with a second-round pick -- the compensation that would've been required to land Austin, a restricted free agent.
The restricted signing period lasts until Friday, but as of this moment, the Jets are out of the Austin sweepstakes -- if you could call it a sweepstakes. The former Monmouth (N.J.) College star visited the Jets last Friday, fueling speculation that an offer sheet would be forthcoming. But he left without a deal, and he isn't going to get one, at least not from the Jets.
It looks like the Jets are confident they can find a potential starting receiver in the first or second round of the draft. Now that they're keeping their second-round pick, it gives them some ammunition in case they decide to trade up in in the first round.

Dallas Cowboys Posted on Sat, Apr. 18, 2009 Dallas Cowboys plan to sign Miles Austin to multiyear deal From wire reports
IRVING — Dallas Cowboys wide receivers Miles Austin and Sam Hurd probably won’t sign their restricted free-agent tenders by today, the deadline for restricted free agents to sign offers with other teams, a source said.
But look for one or both to sign their $1.54 million offers, possibly on Monday. The wild card is Austin, who is in the process of negotiating a multiyear contract extension with the Cowboys.
Austin could wait until the two sides come to an agreement on an extension or he could sign the tender and continue negotiating the extension.
But according to a source, the Cowboys do plan to sign Austin to a multiyear deal.
The team has the right to reduce each player’s initial qualifying offer of $1.54 million if they don’t sign by the Friday deadline.
Both players are in the team’s plans for next season, especially the speedy Austin, who is expected to help replace Terrell Owens.
