Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post calls the idea that Byron Leftwich's signing was a smokescreen "just talk."
Citing a "very good source," Lombardi says the Bucs added Byron because Luke McCown struggled at April minicamp. The Bucs will hold a three-way QB competition between McCown, Leftwich, and Josh Freeman this summer. Source: National Football Post

I always thought Leftwich was an above average starter and he has the bigger arm, I think he'll be a nice gateway until Freeman is ready.

If McCown brings his A game and Lefty brings his, McCown wins.
I'm not so convinced about that...Leftwich is a smart QB with a great arm, his speed and delivery speed are the biggest things that hold him back but as far as a pure passer goes, I like Leftwich more personally.

What have we seen that shows otherwise? We have seen Leftwich play very solid lots of times, I've yet to see McCown play up to that level anywhere, or seen anything to give me a reason to think he could be that good.

What have most everyone seen? nothing, McCown was not show cased by the former regime. What have Bucs fans seen that have been to training camps and watched Josh play? He has talent. he has a strong arm, mobile, and good accuracy. Leftwich is a career back up.

Both of which are big in this offense. Jags likes mobile QBs in his offense. There are dozens of designed roll outs and moving the QB around in this offense scheme, all of which Lefty does not do well.
We'll see...like LS2 said, when have we seen McCown really play at a high level for any period of time? There are plenty of guys who "have talent" but never amount to anything.
