NFL.com Wire Reports

Harry Kalas, the voice of NFL Films and longtime Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster, died Monday. He was 73.

Kalas, who punctuated innumerable home runs with his "Outta here!" call, died after being found passed out in the broadcast booth before a game against the Washington Nationals.

Long-time NFL voice Harry Kalas died Monday at 73.

"We lost our voice today," Phillies president David Montgomery said, his voice cracking. "He has loved our game and made just a tremendous contribution to our sport and certainly to our organization."

Kalas was discovered by the Phillies' director of broadcasting at about 12:30 p.m. and taken to a local hospital, Montgomery said.

Kalas had surgery earlier this year for an undisclosed ailment that the team characterized as minor. He looked somewhat drawn last week as the Phillies opened the season at home.

Fixed.

Harry will forever be memorable to Philadelphia citizens and sports fans. Guarenteed there's a statue of him unveiled outside CBP before too long.

Anyone else think that Kalas passing may have encouraged John Madden to retire?

The Phillies showed a ton of class yesterday by honoring Harry Kalas at the ball park and allowing all fans (with tickets or not) to attend a viewing on the field.

The Phillies will wear a patch on their uniform this year to honor Harry and everytime they hit a home run at CBP, we will hear Harry's voice saying that it's, "outta here!"

Here's an article about the ceremony anf a nice tribute to him by Steve Sabol:
Steve Sabol of NFL Films said yesterday that as he crossed the Walt Whitman Bridge on his way to the tribute, he thought of one of Whitman's poems in which the two great sounds of Earth are said to be the sound of the sea and that of the wind.

"I'd add a third," Sabol said. "The voice of Harry Kalas rising to the roar of the crowd."
