In today's market, anyone know if it's possible for an owner to make less than a player on his take-home salary? I guess that sounds silly, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Sure. I'd imagine that some owners pay themselves very little as a salary but at the end of the day they have significantly more wealth because they are the owner.
