Clinton Portis

Postby cincypalmer » Tue Apr 28, 2009 11:25 am

So i have been offered Clinton Portis for the 9th overall pick in are entry draft. I actually think the owner is wanting to take Derrick Ward..would i be completly retarded for not taking this. Will Portis give me 2 more years??? Advice please!

My league consists of 8 teams. We keep all players every year. Team rosters cannot exceed 28 players excluding defense. Every year we have a 3 round entry draft with the bottom 4 teams being in a lottery for the 1st overall pick.We start 2 qbs, 3rbs, 3 wrs, 2tes and 1 d. Basic point system..1 point 25 yards qb..1 point 10 yards rb/wr/te rush or recieving. 6 points for all tds run/throw/catch...minus 2 for int/fum.. At the end of the year each team draws a player from a hat and that player becomes a free agent and is put into a silent auction. My team consists of the following:
manning-romo-warner-shaubb-kitna
andre johnson-edwards-clayton-owens-marshall-jennings
peterson-thomas jones-stewart-taylor-benson-julious jones-graham-micheal bush
danials-winslow-witten
baltimore-chicago.

The league is entering its 7th year, i won it in 2008.

I would do this in a heartbeat...no brainer I think. The guy is pretty much a lock for 350 touches each season and double digit TDs and this season will be no different. Grab him for the cheap price you're getting him for and laugh all the way to a championship with Manning/Peterson/Portis/AJ/Edwards/Witten/Daniels/BAL as your core guys with the others added in. No one will be able to touch that. You've already got a ridiculous amount of depth and a guy like Portis basically holds no risk for what you're paying for him.

I do think Portis is on the decline, but I think this is good value for him. You should get at least 2 more productive seasons out of him. But, be ready for the midseason injury that he gets every year.

yeah...Portis is still a top 12-ish RB, plus he's one of the few in a situation where there isn't much competition for touches at the RB position.

Yea...those terrible midseason injuries that have caused him to miss 0 games in the last 2 seasons. In fact, in only 1 season in the past 4 seasons did he miss any games at all. In the other 3 seasons he hasn't touched the ball fewer than 370 times in any one season with 31 TDs in those 3 years. At least do some homework if you're going to give advice...the guy has been as durable a RB as we have in the NFL over the years.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. You are not going to get a Portis worthy guy at 9 anyway.

Yep, do the trade. I don't know why people are thinking Portis is going to hit a wall this year. Besides the age thing(he is only turning 28 in Sept) and a few injuries that he has played through he has been as consistant as the best of them. IMO he is the definition of a superstar #2 back who is going to get you the consistant numbers a #2 back is for. If you aleady have AP, your in the fast track to a championship.

He may not have missed any games, but there was a definite decline in output last year- after 5 straight games of 120+ yards, he had more than 80 yards only once during the final 8 games. That decline was due largely to injury- read the Portis injury thread for the complete rundown. Combining last year's issue with the 06-07 season, where he played only 9 games, and that doesn't sound good. Of course, it's a bit of a selective memory, as you pointed out.

To the topic brought up- I would do it. If Derrick Ward is a reasonable pickup at #9, and not a reach, then that's a better value.

First of all, where in my post did I say that he missed any games?? I said that he will be injured like he is every year. He has a nagging injury that seems to slow him down every year. He was banged up last year and look at his stat line during those weeks:
Week 9: vs Pitt- 15 carries for 68 yards, NO TD's
Week 11: vs Dall- 15 carries for 68 yards, NO TD's
Week 13: vs NYG- 11 carries for 28 yards, NO TD's
Week 14: at Balt- 11 carries for 32 yards, NO TD's
Week 15 @ Cincy (terrible D)- 25 carries for 77 yards, NO TD's

He went on tear weeks 2-8 and that was really it. Like I said, he will start off hot then the injuries will pile on. He is going to be 28 when the season starts and he has had a lot of carries. I am staying away from Portis this year, becuase I believe he is breaking down and it will really start to show this year.

You can knock me and say I don't do my homework, but I think I give pretty sound advice. We are both entitled to our opinion and i guess we will see who is right when the season gets going.

Thank you, Kareighuis. That is exactly my point. But, next time I will do my homework before I give advice. :-b
