QB Rankings (for research)

Postby brdmaverick » Tue Apr 28, 2009 12:50 pm

hi guys,

I am looking to do a schedule anaylsis by opponents' quarterbacks.

In order to start, I was hoping you could help rank the QBs so that I will have an overall unbiased analysis.

Can you rank the projected starting quarterbacks (1 to 32, 1 being the best and 32 being the worst). 1 should be the quarterback you would not want your team to have to face. 32 would be the starting quarterback that you would love your team to be facing.

Here is who I project to be the starting QBs at this point in time........

Pats Tom Brady
Jets Mark Sanchez
Dolphins Chad Pennington
Bills Trent Edwards

Steelers Ben Roethlisberger
Browns Brady Quinn
Bengals Carson Palmer
Ravens Joe Flacco

Colts Peyton Manning
Jaguars David Garrard
Texans Matt Schaub
Titans Kerry Collins

Chiefs Matt Cassel
Raiders JaMarcus Russell
Broncos Kyle Orton
Chargers Philip Rivers

Cowboys Tony Romo
Redskins Jason Campbell
Giants Eli Manning
Eagles Donovan McNabb

Packers Aaron Rodgers
Vikings Sage Rosenfels
Lions Matt Stafford
Bears Jay Cutler

BuccaneersByron Leftwich
Saints Drew Brees
Falcons Matt Ryan
Panthers Jake Delhomme

Cardinals Kurt Warner
Seahawks Matt Hasselbeck
49ers Shaun Hill
Rams Marc Bulger

Are you talking strictly from a fantasy perspective?

For example, Aaron Rogers could very well put up better numbers than Big Ben, but I am of the opinion that Big Ben is a superior quarterback on a much better team. If I were a NFL GM, and given the choice, I would much rather build my team around Big Ben. As a fantasy GM, I would rather have Rogers.

good question, but no, this is NOT based on fantasy football. Thanks for asking so that I could clear that up.

Think of it this way.

You are the GM of an expansion team that will only be in existence for 1 year (2009). You can choose the quarterback from any team. How would your rankings look of these qb's?

Griese is probably 4th on the depth chart for the Buccs. I expect McCown and Leftwhich to battle for the starting job, with Freeman waiting in the wings. I don't think Griese is even in the equation.

Also doubt Huard will start over Shaun Hill.

If this isn't fantasy based, I'll need to do some more thinking on it.

Strictly from a football perspective (skill, intangibles, age, injury history) I would rank them like this:
Peyton Manning
Tom Brady
Ben Roethlisberger
Drew Brees
Matt Ryan
Jay Cutler
Tony Romo
Philip Rivers
Carson Palmer
Matt Schaub
Aaron Rodgers
Kurt Warner (He wont be playing for much longer or else he would be in the top 5)
Eli Manning
Matt Hasselbeck
Joe Flacco
Donovan McNabb
David Garrard
Chad Pennington
Trent Edwards
Marc Bulger
Brady Quinn
Matt Cassel
Matt Stafford
Mark Sanchez
Sage Rosenfels
JaMarcus Russell
Jason Campbell
Jake Delhomme
Kyle Orton
Shaun Hill
Kerry Collins
Byron Leftwich

It was very hard to rank some of those players, but I was going strictly based on talent, age, recent success, and the immeasurables they bring to a football team. You could rearrange guys give or take a few spots, but for the most part I think that list is alright. I would have ranked Brady ahead of Manning, but you never know what guys look like coming back from such a nasty injury. Some of you may argue that Flacco is too low, but he wasn't the reason the Ravens made the playoffs. Matt Ryan looked a lot better than Flacco last year in my opinion.

It pains me to say it, but I give the probability of Shaun Hill going into the season as the starter for SF at close to 30-40% with Alex Smith at 70-60%.

Hard to put Stafford as the starting QB for the Lions...all signs point to Culpepper starting this year and them bringing Stafford along slowly.

As quarterback I went with who I thought would be getting the bulk of the snaps for their respective team for the entire season.

I, too, think that Culpepper will be the starter, but once they are 0-3 or 0-4 I bet they will have the attitude of 'might as well put Stafford in'.

Feel free to replace Alex Smith with Shaun Hill in your rankings, but please help with the rankings. I have ranked the QBs accoridng to my opinion, but I would really like at least a few samples so that the rankings are not completely biased.

thank you THE DIPLOMATS for your rankings

I don't think they'll stick Stafford in...they'll remember too well how Joey Harrington turned out after throwing him into the fire too early. For every Matt Ryan and works out well, there are 10 others who are like Alex Smith, Joey Harrington, etc.
