Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
Haynes, a fifth-round pick by the Steelers in 2002, had 738 rushing yards, 429 receiving yards and five total touchdowns in six seasons in Pittsburgh. The North Springs High School graduate and former University of Georgia star last played in the NFL in 2007, but he will compete for a roster spot behind starter Michael Turner and top backup Jerious Norwood in Atlanta.
The Falcons released wide receiver Troy Bergeron, who had just signed with the team Tuesday, to make roster room for Haynes. Bergeron spent 2006 training camp with the Falcons and played three seasons with the Arena Football League's Georgia Force.
