Rookie QB Sanchez completes his first Jets practice

Mark Sanchez has been on a whirlwind tour since the Jets traded up to select the former USC quarterback with the No. 5 overall pick in last weekend’s NFL draft.

Sanchez finally got down to business Friday as the Jets opened a three-day rookie minicamp. Sanchez has his sights set on winning the starting job, but at this point, he’s still busy trying to adjust to the terminology in his new playbook.

“It is a new system, so you want to just try and speak the language as soon as possible,” Sanchez said. “I am trying to get all of the terminology down. Me being tough on myself, I want it right every time, and it is not always that way, especially not on the first weekend.”

Although Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan led the Ravens and Falcons, respectively, to the playoffs as rookies in 2008, Sanchez is trying to keep the possibility of matching that feat with the Jets next season in perspective.

“They were really anomalies among rookies. That is pretty special what they did,” Sanchez said. “They would be the first to say that they had a ton of help. For me to be successful this year — for this team to be successful — it is about the defense playing well, playing well on special teams and the return game and the offense moving the ball efficiently. It is not just on the quarterback.”

Sanchez is expected to compete with Kellen Clemens for the starting job in training camp. The rookie QB leaves no doubt about what he wants to accomplish.

“You do not grow up dreaming to be a backup,” Sanchez said. “That is just the way I feel about it. I am going to compete like heck, and we will see what happens.”
