Early thought on Dynasty keepers (need to drop 3)

Postby ThePrez » Fri May 15, 2009 2:49 pm

Looking for some early thoughts on my dynasty squad (12 team league)

We have an optional 3 round draft (for rookies, FA's, and dropped players) that we'll need to drop 3 guys if we want to participate.

Can't drop defense or kicker

Yahoo standard scoring plus 0.5 pts per catch
Yahoo standard lineup plus WR/RB flex

My squad -

Carson Palmer
Shaun Hill
Jason Campbell

Adrian Peterson
Chris Johnson
Pierre Thomas
Felix Jones
Dominic Rhodes
Ahmad Bradshaw
Rashard Mendenhall
Sammy Morris

Andre Johnson
Marques Colston
Eddie Royal
Antonio Bryant
Steve Breaston
Domenik Hixon

Dustin Keller

Mason Crosby
New York Jets

I have the 5th pick in the mini draft, and it will be conducted in a non-serpentine order. I would assume teams with picks 1-4 will participate, but the mini-draft is optional so I'll find that out as the season gets closer.

Any thoughts on which 3 (excluding kicker and def) to drop? Also, who should I be targeting with that #5 pick?

Not too long ago I was thinking my 3 drops would be SHill, SMorris, and DRhodes... but Hill might be worth watching in the preseason. If he gets the starting he could be worth holding onto... not that Campbell has done anything too impressive as my possible backup to Palmer.

Appreciate any thoughts!
Thanks

Picking at 1.05 is easy, drop Morris and take your pick, probably Greene but McCOy is possible as well.

Next is tricky. To really answer you need to know how many guys will participate in the draft. If it is only 5-6, then drop Rhodes or Hixon and take the best available at 10th or 11th overall.

Question -- do you HAVE to drop 3 in order to participate in your draft? i.e. can you drop 1 guy and still get 1 pick?

If you have to drop 3 in order to make the draft, I would do so. You need help at QB.

I would drop Campbell, Hixon, and Morris.

For your 1.5 pick, I would rank your options as:
1. a veteran upgrade at QB (if there is one available better than Campbell).
2. best available of Wells/Moreno/Brown/McCoy. I would guess Crabtree is taken before your pick, which is ok because 1. you don't need a WR and 2. I am not high on Crabtree anyways.

For your other picks -- I would take best available player -- but I would make sure one of my pics is a QB, either a veteran at 1.5 or Sanchez with a later pick. OR you can look to trade some of your depth (or the 1.5 and another player) for a QB upgrade -- but that's the biggest hole on your team and I think it needs to be addressed.

Yes... to do the mini-draft you have to drop 3 guys.

I am pretty set on dropping Morris and Rhodes... not much use for either. I was ponder either Hixon or Campbell for the last drop guy.

I guess I'll figure out eventually how many teams will participate in the draft and go from there.

Any other thoughts out there?

Thanks!!

Ok, so you MUST drop 3 to be in the draft. You have 3 good drop condidates, just not ideal. It will all come down to how many owners are participating in the draft. You can't really judge anythign until that is figured out.

I would drop Rhodes, Hixon and Morris. AS I said, Morris is the easy drop. Really, I can't see you not being able to pick up someone better than those 3 so I would do it. Gets a little trickier if you have 10 guys participating though but really, why not, at least you get to grab a fairly big name rookie in Greene or McCoy.

Drop:
Morris: Not young, WAY crowded back field, and it's New England so there wont be a single major contributor in the run game most likely.
Rhodes: Not young. Fred Jackson just got a new contract (or an extension). He may be startable while Lynch is suspended, but not over guys you have. He won't be in a much better situation the rest of his career either, upside is minimal unless Lynch and Jackson are out, and then he still isn't better than AP, CJ4.2343030, and Pierre Thomas.
Shaun Hill: SF will be a hardnosed run first offense. Hill's probability of winning the job isn't as high as what you would like...its probably like 50% to 60%. He has okay upside and I like his weapons, but he isn't that great of a QB, and he may not get that many chances to throw to them. That is if he even gets the job. Cut him, chances are if you want him he will be there in the 3rd if you think you want him back...

Guys on the Edge, but why you should keep them:
Hixon: Young, and if he can keep his job he could be the Giants #1 all season...and maybe longer. HUGE upside.
Campbell: Campbell was the 15th best QB last year, with not that many TDs. His offense this year should do nothing but improve, and if Devin Thomas or Malcom Kelly can show up they could be a big boost.
