Where does my team need improvement? WHIR

Postby SteelCurtnDee » Fri May 29, 2009 9:31 am

So its getting time in my dynasty league(meaning you keep full roster year to year) to where im preparing to make trades before we have to release player to make room for our draft. i have a couple positions that I HAVE to trade because ill have to release good players if i dont.

i need to get my roster down to 2 QBs, 3 RBs, 3 WRs, and 2 TEs.

MY ROSTER
QB Tony Romo
QB Chad Pennington
RB Ronnie Brown
RB Steve Slaton
RB Thomas Jones
RB Larry Johnson
WR Santonio Holmes
WR Bernard Barrian
WR Devin Hester
TE Vernon Davis
TE John Carlson
TE Kellen Winslow

So if i didnt do anything id have to release a TE and a RB so i definitely need to trade someone from there. In this sort of league youth is a plus, so i think i want to hang on to carlson, brown, and slaton... i keep hearing this is vernon davis' breakout year but i dunno, im thinking of trading winslow because someone would be more likely to go for a big name but hes always hurt. where should i look to improve?

Well, you have issues at WR. What are your active roster positions? If there is no flex, I'd seek to trade Winslow as you suggested. He's working in a new system and who's his QB? Injury and stupidity also factor. V. Davis also has new system and who his QB is to deal with, but their is all the buzz now that Martz is gone. Carlson has promise and Hasselbeck with little running game to compete with.

Hard to decide whether to ditch Jones or Johnson. Both have new coaches. Both have guys on their heels, but seemingly Jones more with the drafting of Greene? I'd keep Johnson unless required in a trade. Anyway, I'd seek to trade Winslow and the one of these backs you prefer less in a package deal with almost any of your current WR to get a stud WR and a draft pick. Holmes is at least a #1, so hold onto him. Hester has some hope with Culter, but how much? Berrian is the odd man out.

Hope that helps! Thanks for your.

thanks for the help on mine, i'll give this some input...
RB is your strength and i agree with you an getting younger. id try to shop LJ and a TE for an upgrade somewhere. (Id try to keep Winslow if possible but dont let that hold you back if somebody counter offers for him) WR is your biggest need. maybe offer LJ +Vern or hester for a better WR? QB2 would be a good place to upgrade since Romo should drop off without TO.Pennington is a solid QB but he'll never be a fantasy stud. id try to get a young backup that might break-out instead (Flacco, Shaub, Trent Edwards or Brady Quinn (somebody with more upside). they might produce down the road better than pennington and you can get them cheap now and not have to depend on them.

id start by looking at other teams' rosters and determine who could use LJ or a TE. and see what kind of upgrade they could offer you. Throw Hester or pennington in to sweeten the deal. Doesnt really matter what position you get back, imo, as long as its an upgrade, then go for it.

hope that helps, its hard to get specific without knowing other teams rosters and what they need/have excess of.

if you could package LJ and Thomas Jones for a young RB stud, that would be golden. toss in everything else you would drop otherwise..it would take the right team dynamics for an owner to do that though, he'd have to have 1 stud and need more RBs.

As has been said, WR is your weak spot. The best simple scenario would be to trade (TJ or LJ) and a WR for an upgrade at WR. I wouldn't expect Vernon Davis to command much value at all, but if you find someone who wouldn't mind taking him in, then throw him in to the deal also.

Also, knowing your starting roster spots and total roster size limit would help. Do you start 2 TEs?

I agree with the sentiments above that WR is your most glaring need. Hopefully you have a shot in your draft at Crabtree, Maclin or Harvin for your WR future.

In the meantime, I agree that trading vets like Thomas Jones and Larry Johnson for a capable WR would be a smart move.

If you can find an owner that likes Devin Hester's upside I'd move LJ or TJ + Hester for a WR upgrade -- I like Hester but he's still a project, probably no more than 800 yds and 6 TDs even with Cutler.

I prefer Davis over Winslow at TE just because youth is on Davis' side and Winslow has injury history. There are some that like Winslow's chances in Tampa next year, so somebody might bite on him if you make him available.

I think your priority would be to move Thomas Jones. Despite 15 TD's last year he won't be a top producer for long. He's 31 already and whining about his contract. I'd try and see if a team with a top-5 pick in your draft might want to deal for Jones so that they can try to pickup Shonn Greene in your draft to handcuff to him. (Perhaps a T. Jones-D. Hester combo for a WR in the Marques Colston-Greg Jennings-Roy Williams range, like 8th-14th in WR rankings).

If you have to move Jones and LJ together, you need to get a great WR in return (You'd need to find a team loaded at WR and desperate at RB willing to do this. Can't imagine anyone parting with Fitz, A. Johnson, Calvin Johnson, R. Moss or S. Smith even for 2 RBs). With just Slaton and Brown at RB, you'd be thin at RB instead of WR.

I think moving Jones and Hester for a WR upgrade or Jones and Winslow Jr. for a WR are your best bets. If the other owner counters your best offer asking for LJ instead of T. Jones, I'd begrudgingly do it. LJ's 29 years old, so in a keeper league his value is diminishing -- but I like him better than Jones for the short-term.
I have the doomsday device!

Well I'm not sure I would keep Davis and hope that he breaks out this year, I would keep Kellen and Carlson. Where your team needs improvement is at wr, you are very thin and really don't have a true #1 wr on your team. It is a little tough to say what you can get in trades without seeing other teams rosters and I'm not sure what you can get in return for your players. I think I would stick with your roster and look to improve at wr.
