Thanks a lot!
The three no-brainers:
Brown Fitz White
I am not liking what is being reported on Westy... he may not be ready to go until Week 1 is the report -- and if they are saying that now, I think there is a strong possibility that he won't be ready until later than that.
I guess I would keep Thomas as my 4th keeper over Welker since it is a non-PPR league. And only keeping 4, I wuld not advocate keeping Rivers.
You consider Brown a no brainer? I'd like to, especially since Ricky is a year older, and Brown's knee has had another year to recover, but not sure what I can expect from him.
I don't see Brown as a no-brainer personally...what has he done to warrant that title? I mean I certainly didn't find his 916 yards rushing and 10 TDs as being no-brainer caliber to me.
Personally, I'd keep Westbrook, Thomas, Fitzgerald, and White. I think you get FAR more potential from Westbrook even if he misses a game or two than you do Brown just based on pure touches both will receive during the season. Thomas could be very good this year if he gets enough touches and Fitz and White are definitely no brainers from that list.
Yes I do consider Brown a no-brainer out of that group.
News is filtering out as we speak that this is a serious surgery for Westy. I love his style of play and he is a tough SOB, but there's only so much a body can take.
Let me put it this way -- would you rather have 4 years of Brown and his top-10 to top-15 RB production (which I think is a somewhat low forecast), or MAYBE 1 year of top-10 production of Westy? I say maybe because... if he is out until Week 1 (which again may be a best case scenario) how sharp is he going to be? It takes ANY football player some time to get into "game" shape. So even best-case scenario (reading the tea leaves as they are today) he may not be really to top form until Week 3 or Week 4 -- that's about 25% of your regular season you are missing production.
Taking away Westy, who else out of the squad should he keep over Brown? Rivers? Welker? nope.....
Brown was a top-3 RB before his injury in '07... he now has another year departed from the knee injury and a MUCH better OL than 2007. The talk out of MIA is that they want Brown to be the feature back -- look back at the end of last year and see who was getting the majority of the rushing attempts -- I think a 70/30 split is worst case scenario for Brown this year.
By the way... Brown's 900+ yards and 10 TDs in '08 isn't too shabby considering he was less than 9 months from an ACL tear.
I would take the much surer thing in Brown over Westy.
Same coaching staff as last year that had a pure RBBC = no expected change in how they divide up the work next season. There is a lot of "talk" every year regarding everything but you can't get caught up too much in it. Your argument is based on the idea that he was a top RB before he got hurt 2 seasons ago with no Ricky Williams there to factor in and with a completely different coaching staff and offensive scheme? And the idea that there is "talk" that they want to make him a more featured back after they had more success than they've had in many years by winning their division last season? I'm sorry, but that's just not enough to call him anywhere near a "no-brainer" for a keeper.
To be completely honest I'd probably keep Welker before I kept Brown. He has been targeted 145 and 150 times in the past 2 seasons and he's been the #1 and #2 overall receiver in receptions in the past 2 seasons. I just don't see Brown being a legitimate top RB as higher than anything but a flex player.
Also...that entire article is based upon a comment made by one person "close to the situation"...I'm sorry but that's just not enough for me to be concerned about it yet. Removing bone spurs is not normally a major issue and until it's proven otherwise, I don't buy it.

Even if you're not sipping the Ronnie Brown cool-aid, it would be tough to keep 3 WRs and only 1 RB. Possible, yes. But you'd have to be near flawless in your drafting of RBs.

Yes, but if you're strictly comparing Brown and Welker I'd take Welker right now as a keeper over Brown. You don't think you could win with a combo of Fitz/White/Welker at WR? I'm a big RB guy but that's potentially 2 top 5 WRs (Fitz and White) and a guy who will probably be top 5 in receptions again this season in Welker who is a very solid WR2 at the least.
If he did that and Thomas worked out well then he could get away with just some decent contributors to rotate at the RB2 spot.
I would keep Fitz, Roddy and Pierre. The 4th keeper is all about how much risk you want to take. I think Welker is the safest out of the remaining guys. You pretty much know what you are going to get with him. But, the league being a non ppr does hurt his value. But, I expect the Pats offense to be exlposive with Brady back. I am not as high on Ronnie Brown as others, but he is a starting Rb so he does have value. I just don't like the fact that he is so up and down. Plus, Ricky Williams will steal carries. If you are real gambler, keep Westbrook. He has the highest ceiling and could easily be a top 5 back. But, he is 30 and is having ankle surgery. You know that he will be on the injury report every week and will miss some games due to injury. But, when he plays he would win some weeks for you. So, if you want to gamble keep Westy, if you want to play it safe keep Welker.
