July 1, 2009
WHAT'S NEW
Injuries, a weak defense, a lame duck coach and the lack of a run game all added up to the Seahawks (4-12) finishing third in the NFC West in 2008, the first time in five years they didn't win the division. So, what's new for 2009 to bring fantasy owners back to Seattle?
Not much. The biggest offseason roster move was the signing of free agent T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who will take over as Seattle's No. 1 receiver. His arrival gives owners hope that a healthy Matt Hasselbeck, who missed much of last season with a back injury, can rebound in a big way. But both players are risky picks because of uncertainty surrounding the QB's balky back.
The Seahawks' other big offseason moves involved the coaching staff. Longtime coach Mike Holmgren stepped down and Jim Mora took over, replacing much of Holmgren's staff, including the offensive and defensive coordinators.
While those changes will give the Seahawks a new look on the sidelines, this is essentially the same team that struggled to run the ball last season with Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett in the backfield. Fantasy owners should be wary of visiting Seattle for anything more than receiving help on draft day.
