I used to be someone who drafted the guy with the most upside, hoping to land the next Portis sensation who comes out of nowhere and wins your league for you (and that actually is what happened to me prompting me to adopt that philosophy). After several seasons (following Portis' rookie year) of drafting a "prospect" who never amounts to what I hoped and one of my starters going down with an injury, and now I have to search the waiver wire or make a trade or whatever...anyway, I've been burned by that too many times.
I argue now that the RB3 should be a starting RB of an NFL team that will see plenty of playing time. That way, even though his numbers won't replace what you lost (if you lose someone), at least you will have someone in your lineup who is playing and getting touches. I would like at least 15 touches/game.
So, with that in mind, I would avoid RBs in considerable danger of not starting such as McFadden, Washington, Lewis, Rice etc... I would instead try to get a L. Johnson, K. Smith, C. Benson, etc... The one exception I would make are the two N.O. backs - I think you can ignore the "starter" label with them - both will have plenty of touches to help out a fantasy team and one or the other should be available in that RB3 area.
I would love to have an LJ as my #3. There seem to be a lot of nice options in McFaddy, FWP, and Wells. Basically, any guys with starting positions that have potential.
I think, therefore I am. I think fantasy, therefore I am unreal?

I'm starting to warm up to Run DMC as an option. There's just no telling how crippling a TT injury can be. I want to see how camp pans out. I think Mike Bush could be a feature back too so it'll be interesting to see how they want to use those guys.

I've seen McFadden going as an RB2 in some mocks, and that just blows my mind. Right now, I would only want him as a mid-range RB3 at most. I just don't see the infatuation with him this season. Lots of question marks, and lots of competition for carries.
Maybe someone can enlighten me with all the love for Run DMC?
I'm loving DMC as an RB3. I've even gotten him as my RB4 in some mocks. Depending on how the draft progresses, I'm not interested in LJ or Benson- chance for good production, or being a waste of a pick. Benson's the worse of the two.

Off the top of my head- 1- still has talent that led him to be top rookie RB from his class; 2- still in an offense that has churned productive RBs; 3- cause of injuries during last year addressed; 4- Fargas reportedly will be relegated to the bench; 5- gains FB Lorenzo Neal, who has been an outstanding FB for 1000 yard rushers since at least Eddie George; 6- weak divisional run defenses.

Glad to see us on the same page for one of my two sleeper RBs. I'm really considering going into this season in a league or two with a RB2 platoon of LJ/DMac and seeing what happens. I figure by holding off and using earlier picks on other positions, I can build a very solid team and between these two, I think I can get respectable production at the very least.
DMac has alot to prove this year. I hope he worked on his lateral agility in the off-season, because he didn't make that many defenders miss last season. If he can improve on that, and run a bit better between the tackles, the sky's the limit for this guy because of his blistering speed.
Last season, not only was he injured quite a bit, but he barely got any carries in the games he did start. How is he supposed to break a long TD run if he only gets 5 to 10 carries a game?
If he is healthy this season, Oakland needs to use him like a horse...
